Duration : 4 months
Project Site : Surigao del Norte State University
(SNSU) – Magpayang, Mainit, Surigao del Norte
Budgetary Requirement: 1000.00 pesos
Rationale
• String bean ‘sitao' (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) is an
important crop in Asian countries like Malaysia,
Thailand, Indonesia and the Philippines. It is
also considered as one of the most important
vegetables in certain parts of Taiwan and China.

• In the Philippines, is a semi temperate legume

cultivated in the Philippines. It is a common
source of protein in the Filipino diet and is
planted on about 2,644 hectares of land in the
country in areas with medium to high elevation
(Delfin et al. 1999).
• For many years, the most common management that
farmers implement to have good growth of crops is the
use of inorganic fertilizer. The use of inorganic fertilizer in
long term has reduced physical, chemical, and biological
traits, as well as organic matter in the soil, and of course,
they will affect efficiency of nutrients. Waseem et al,
(2013).
• Thus, the study will be conducted to know what type of
organic fertilizer using different animal manure that is
suitable for growing the spring bean and to explore and
compare the growth and yield performance of string bean
through organic animal manure.
Review of Related Literature
String Bean (Paseolus vulgaris)
• In the Philippines is string beans, or sitao. It is the most
popularly produced vegetable among edible legumes
because the pods, young shoots as well as the beans are
available throughout the year.
Carabao Manure
• It is economic importance. It's a good organic fertilizer,
containing 18.5 percent nitrogen, 43.7 percent phosphoric
acid, and 9.6 percent potash. It’s also a good source of fuel
either as dried dung, or in generating biogas or methane.
Swine Manure
• It can be used to replace much of the chemical fertilizer
required to fertilize grassland and crops and produce very
substantial reductions in fertilizer costs.

Goat manure
• It is known for increasing the water holding capacity of the
soil, among other uses. creates good soil conditions in the
new garden and existing gardens. It improves soil texture and
therefore uses water efficiently and allows more oxygen to
reach the roots.
Objectives:
1. To evaluate the growth and yield of string bean
under different animal manure.
2. To compare the growth and yield performance of
string beans under various animal manure.
3. To determine which treatment has the higher
number of pods.
Methodology:
LOCATION AND DURATION OF THE STUDY
The research was conducted at the area of horti of
SNSU – Mainit Campus, Magpayang, Mainit, Surigao del
Norte. The duration of the study was from February until
May 2023
PROCESS AND PROCEDURES
 Land Preparation
Nine plots with 2x2 square meter will thoroughly prepared. Weeding and
cultivating will be done using different kind of farm tools. After weeding and
cultivating, the area will be divided into nine plots. Each plots have a distance of
3ft. Will add bamboo fence to support the plants, it will be done when the plant
emerge.
 Seed Sowing
Sowing of Seeds will be done using the diagonal or Quincunx system. Will be
done similar to the square system except additional plant is planted at the center
of the square. Three seeds of string bean will be directly sow per hill with 1 inches
deep at a distance of 2ft per hills and between rows, then if 3 seeds germinated
pull out the 2 seeds, and remain the healthy that emerge. And water the soil
immediately and regularly when the soil is dry.
Treatment Application
Treatments will be apply when the plants are week after sown
with 200g per hill each treatments and will be applied once every 15
days. The study has three treatments with three replications having
five plants per replicate a total of 45 plants. The different treatments
will be as follows:

TREATMENTS RATES (g) PER HILL

T1 – CARABAO MANURE 200
T2 – SWINE MANURE 200
T3 – GOAT MANURE 200
Insecticide and Pesticide Application
It will apply to control if possible the insects and
pest will be present in the plant.

Harvesting
String bean pods will harvest when pods are
slightly firm, using cutting tools pods will pick earlier
before the bumps of the bean started to show. And
will harvest 5 times only.

Gathering of Data

The following data will be gathered for this study.

1. Plant Height (cm). This will taken by measuring the height
from the ground to the top of the plant using measuring
tools every two weeks or 15 days after applying the
treatments and will be stop after first harvesting.

2. Number of leaves. This will taken by counting the number of

leaves every two weeks or 15 days after applying the
treatments and will be stop after first harvest.
3. Number of pods per cluster. This will recorded by counting
the number of pods per cluster from sample plants per
treatment used in gathering number of flower per cluster.

4. Pod length (cm). This will taken by measuring the length of

pods from pedicel end to the blossom end using a measuring
tools during the first and last harvest. Get 2 samples of each
plant, select two pods the longest and the shortest pods and
find the mean on each measurement.

5. Plant Survival (%).This will obtained during the last

harvesting by counting the plants that survived per plot.
Statistical Analysis

All data to be gathered will be analyzed using Analysis
of Variance (ANOVA) in Completely Randomized Design
and the significant result will be compared using
Turkey’s Honest Significant Difference (THSD).
