Rectilinear Kinematics – Continuous motion
• The kinematics of a particle is characterized by specifying at any given
instant,the particle’s position,velocity and acceleration.

• Position
• The straight line path of a particle will be defined using asingle
coordinate axis , s.
• Displacement
• The displacement of a particle is defined as the change in its position. For
example,if the position moves from one point to another ,the displacement
is ∆s = s’-s

• Velocity
If the particle moves through a displacement ∆s during the time interval ∆t,
the average velocity during this time interval is
• Acceleration
Provided the velocity of the particle is known at two points, the average
acceleration of the particle during the time interval ∆t is defined as t
Erratic motion
Curvilinear motion
• Occasionally the motion of a particle can best be described along a
path that can be expressed in terms of x, y ,z coordinates.
Projectile motion
Example Group work
Normal and Tangential components
Problem Individual assignment
Cylindrical components
• Sometimes the motion of the particle is constrained on a path that is best
explained using cylindrical components. If motion is restricted to the plane then
polar coordinates are used.
