Total Energy Requirement

(TER) & Distribution of TER

Definition:

 An adequate, healthy diet must satisfy human needs for energy and all essential nutrients.
Furthermore, dietary energy needs recommendation cannot be considered in isolation of
other nutrients in the diet, as lack of one will influence the others.
 Total energy requirement is the total number of calories needed in 24-hour period. Energy
requirements of people differ, depending on BMR (REE) and activities.
Calculation of TER: Factorial Method

 Determination of ideal body weight

 Calculation of BMR for 24 hrs.
 Correct the BMR for sleep
 Compute for physical activity
 Compute for SDA
 Compute for TCR = cBMR + PA+ SDA
TER Calculation

 Case:

Height: 5’4” or 160 cm

54 inches tall = 64 inches
64 in x 2.54 = 165.56 or 160 cm.
Actual Body Weight: 65kg
TER Calculations

A. Determination of IBW (Ideal Body Weight)

• Use the standard weight and height tables

Tannhauser method Fernando’s Method

Males:
[height in cm-100] – [(height in cm- 100)10%]
IBW= 50 kg = 2.3 kg every inch over 5 ft.
Ex: of height is 160 cm. Females:
[160-100] – [(160-100) 10%] = 54 kg IBW = 45.5 kg + 2.3 kg every inch over 5 ft.

Ex: 5 feet 2 inch male

= 50 + (2x2.3 kg)
= 54.6 kg or 120 lbs
TER Calculation

B. Determine BMR for 24 hrs

Male = 1 kcal/kg IBW/hr x 24

Female = 0.95 kcal/kg IBW/hr x 24

Example: Male IBW = 54 kg.

1 kcal/kg x 54 kg x 24 = 1296 kcal/day
TER Calculation

C. CORRECT THE BMR

Subtract 10% of kcal/kg/IBW/hrs of sleep from BMR

Ex: Slept for 8 hrs.

0.1x 54kg x 8hrs = 43.2 kcal
1296 kcal – 43.2 kcal = 1252.8 kcal
TER Calculation

D. Compute for Physical Activity

Ex: Moderate Physical activity

75% of corrected BMR
0.75 x 1252.8 = 939.6 kcal

Bed rest – 10% of corrected BMR

Sedentary – 30% of corrected BMR
Light- 50% of corrected BMR
Moderate – 75% of corrected BMR
Heavy – 100% of corrected BMR
TER Calculation

E. Compute for SDA

10% of the sum of cBMR and PA

Ex: 10% (cBMR + PA)

0.1 (1252.8 + 939.6) = 219.24 kcal/day
TER Calculation

F. COMPUTE FOR TOTAL ENERGY REQUIREMENT

TER = cBMR + PA + SDA

TER = 1252.8 + 939.6 + 219.24
TER = 2411.64 kcal/day
CALCULATIONS OF NUTRIENT
DISTRIBUTION BASED ON TER:

Given TER 2400kcal/day

NUTRIENT % COMPUTATION GRAMS
equivalent
CHO 60% 2400kcal/d x .6 = 1447 kcal 1447/4 = 360
Protein 10% 2400kcal/d x .10 = 241kcal 241/ 4 = 60
Fat 30% 2400kcal/d x .30 = 724 kcal 724/9 = 80

Diet Rx:
TER 2400kcal, 362g CHO, 60g protein, 80g Fats
