From tadpole to frog
Frogs and toads belong to a group of animals
called amphibians. This word means living a
double life. Frogs and toads love a double life
because they live part of their lives in water and
part on land. They are able to do this because their
bodies change as they grow. This series of changes
is called metamorphosis.
A mother frog lays her eggs in water and
then leaves them on their own to grow. The eggs
contains cells that multiply and grow. Soon the
cells grow into a swimming tadpole. Tadpoles
breathe through gills or small holes in their sides
like fish do. They spend all their time in the water.
The tadpole changes as it grows. The back
legs form slowly. The front legs begin inside the
tadpole under the gill holes. The front legs pop out
when they are fully developed. At the same time
they are ready to be used. As the tadpole reaches
the last day of its life in the water, its tail seem to
disappear. When all of the tadpole’s body are ready
for life on land, it becomes a frog.
