What is GA …??
GA can be defined as the assignment of spaces
for all required functions and equipments
properly coordinated for location and access. It
has 4 steps
1. Allocation of main spaces
2. Setting individual space boundaries
3. Choosing and locating equipment
4. Providing inter related access
REQUIREMENT OF GA
1. Water tight subdivision and integrity
2. Adequate stability
3. Structural integrity
4. Adequate provision for access

It is evolved by a slow process of trial check and


improvement
CONTAINER SHIP

It is a ship designed to carry almost all of its cargo in


containers.
There are two types
• Vertical cell container ship
• Horizontal loading container ship
GA of Vertical cell container ship
• It is arranged to have containers stacked in vertical
cells formed by angle corner guides. Its easy for
loading and discharge.
• The principle objective is to fit maximum no. of
containers within the given hull volume
• The beam of a ship is selected to provide certain
number of cells athwart-ship plus clearance plus
structural and stability requirements
• The cells are made up of formal guide angles
attached to the ship structure and the cell guides are
installed after the main ship structure is complete
• The hatch covers are normally of lift of pantoon type made
water tight by hydraulic or manual means.
• It may carry a no. of containers on deck which is more
economical. These are containers requiring no protection from
weather.
• The deck and hatch covers are designed to support extra weight
of deck containers.
• The vertical loads of the stacked containers are transmitted
directly to double bottom structure
• The vertical cell guide structure takes up the transverse forces
due to ship motion, list and trim
• Container handling equipments will have direct access to each
container in this type of ships.
• In order to obtain smooth, squared holds, these vessels are
often constructed with a double skin
• Tween decks are absent
• Usually no container handling equipment within
the ship, and In areas where ports don’t have the
facility to handle the containers, there should be
handling equipments within the ships.
The containers are guided by these rails of the cell guides during loading and unloading.
GA of Horizontal loading container ship

• Containers are loaded on one or two levels


above the bulk head deck horizontally
• The space below bulk head deck must be
utilized for something other than containers
• The Ship is not restricted to one specific type
and size of containers with specific fittings
• The main structural feature is the strength of
the container deck
• It is designed with the minimum free board
since the bulk head deck is the cargo deck
• The transverse water tight bulk head spacing is
chosen to suite the requirements of
subdivision, stability, deep tanks etc.
Tanks in a Container ship
The main consideration governing the location of tanks are –
• No access is required except manholes for cleaning and maintenance
• Since the liquids are dense, the tanks are located low in the ship to
maintain stability
• Pipes and pumps are provided for each tank for filling it or emptying
it mechanically
• Dimension of free liquid surface should be restricted
• It is desirable to locate tanks symmetrically along the central line to
increase stability
Examples of the tanks are
– Double bottom tanks
– Wing tanks
– Fore peak tanks
– Aft perpendicular tanks
These tanks are used for purposes like
– Fuel oil storage
– Ballasting
– Fresh water storage
– Lubricating oil storage etc.

Containers
• It can be made from wood steel or aluminum
• The American national standards institute
(ANSI) and the international organization of
standardization (ISO) has developed standards
for dimensions, strength and fittings of
containers. Most common type containers
have 20 ft length, 40 ft length
