 Reading: An evening at home
One of the most famous English sayings is “An English’s home is his castle”. The English
are very proud of their homes, and this includes The Denvers. Let’s see what the family
did yesterday.

When Peter came downstairs from his room, he went into the dining room and sat down at the
table. Mother gave the family their meal and they began to eat. The evening meal, generally
taken after seven o’clock and called “dinner”, is the principal meal in most English families on
weekdays.
The lighter meal is called “lunch”. On Sundays the main meal is taken at midday and it may be
called either “lunch” or “dinner”. There is also the name “supper” for a late evening meal,
lighter than dinner.
Family tastes in eating are very different from each other but a full meal may start with soup,
followed by a main course of fish or meat, and end with a sweet (often called “pudding”),
cheese or fruit.
