CONTEXT AND RATIONALE

• Low achievement is the significant problem in Mathematics.

• One of the essential pre-requisite skills needed for the success in higher math
is operations of integers.

• However, it was found out that this is one of the “not mastered”
competencies during the First Quarter of this school year of Mambajao
National High School.

• In addition to, the researcher found out that there were nineteen (19)
identified students in Grade 11 – Sapphire having grades of below 80% in
General Mathematics during the Midterm – First Semester of this school year.

04/15/2023 2
CONTEXT AND RATIONALE

• This research is focus to the Grade 11 – Sapphire

nineteen (19) identified students who are struggling to
cope up the competencies in General Mathematics due
to lack of mastery on the four basic operations of
integers. Their academic performances on the Midterm
– First Semester this school year were below 80%.
04/15/2023 3
CONTEXT AND RATIONALE

• Why Grade 11-Sapphire students are the respondents?

The researcher, is a Math teacher and a class adviser of

the said section.
Though they are already Grade 11 but their level of
competency is still on the Grade 7.

04/15/2023 4
CONTEXT AND RATIONALE

• One of the causes why they had low performance in General

Mathematics is “ lack of skill in performing the operations of
integers.”

• Their level of competency is still on the Grade 7.

• Students’ feedbacks:
They don’t like Math - negative attitude towards the subject.
Overcrowded classroom
Left behind in a day’s class discussions and activities even if they were present
during classroom instructions.
Poor retention skill
04/15/2023 5
CONTEXT AND RATIONALE

• Malka said, “overcrowded classroom resulted to less learning and

lower test scores. These learners need more direct instruction, one-
on-one instructional time and minimal distractions to maximize
their learning potential.”

• The researcher wanted to pull-out the identified learners from the

overcrowded classroom and conduct remedial/ special sessions in the
minimum of 30 minutes from Monday to Thursday (4:00 – 4:30) and
one and a half (1 ½ ) hours every Friday (9:30 – 11:00) since they have
only one subject scheduled on this day.

04/15/2023 6
CONTEXT AND RATIONALE

• More time to engage with students will help improve their retention skill
and increase their academic performance.

• “More practice makes us better.”

• This claim is supported with various researchers that there are plenty of
evidences that practice is the key to attaining high levels of skill in any
discipline.

• The “10,000 hour rule” made famous by Malcolm Gladwell’s book Outliers,
states that to achieve expertise in any field, you need to accumulate ten
thousand hours of deliberate practice.
04/15/2023 7
CONTEXT AND RATIONALE

• When it comes to learning, TIME matters.

• Strengthen by John Caroll, an educational psychologist:

“Spending more time in productive learning environment does,
indeed, typically lead to increase in proficiency.”

04/15/2023 8
CONTEXT AND RATIONALE

• Students failed to permanently register what they learned during class

discussions.

• Children experiencing learning difficulties are suspected of possessing certain

types of mathematical disorders. Students with memory disorders have
difficulty recalling number facts (Sousa, 2001).

• Researchers claimed that using mnemonic is a potential approach to address

problems related to students’ poor retention skills.
• This strategy has been proven effective with students at a wide range of
ability levels (gifted, normally achieving and those with mild and moderate
disabilities) and at all grade levels.
04/15/2023 9
CONTEXT AND RATIONALE

• INTERVENTIONS:

 Facilitate and use mnemonic instructions accompanied

with the worksheets.

Extend and spend the researcher’s free time to conduct

the daily special session for those nineteen (19) identified
students.

04/15/2023 10
CONTEXT AND RATIONALE

• MNEMONIC INSTRUCTION – set of strategies designed to help students

improve their memory of new information. This instruction links new
information prior to knowledge through the use of visual and/or acoustic cues.

• Worksheets will serve as a practice tool to test their knowledge gain from
mnemonic instruction.

• According to Kaymakci, worksheet is a kind of printed instructional material

that is prepared and frequently used by teachers in order to help students to
gain knowledge, skills and values and to engage in active learning and learning-
by-doing in and out of the school.

04/15/2023 11
CONTEXT AND RATIONALE

• Malka emphasized that “worksheets would not be the be-all, end-all,

they would just be one tool of many.”

• It is similar on the statement used in the management effectiveness

that “No one size fits all.”

• Giving worksheets to students is just like spending extended time in

Math classes.

04/15/2023 12
THE PROBLEM

1. What is the academic performances of the students before and

after the interventions?

2. Is there a difference to the level of mastery on operations of

integers after conducting the interventions?

04/15/2023 13
PROPOSED INNOVATION, INTERVENTION AND STRATEGY

• Extended Time
The session will be conducted after classes hours – Monday to Thursday
(4:00 – 4:30), Friday (9:30 – 11:00)

• Conduct Mnemonic Instructions

• Provide Worksheets for application and mastery

• Conduct Pre-test and Post-test

• Conduct an interview after the full implementation of the

interventions
04/15/2023 14
QUESTIONS FOR INTERVIEW
1. Do mnemonic instructions given to you make it easier for you to
learn? Give reasons.

2. Do the worksheets provided to you make difference on your mastery

of performing the operations of integers? Give reasons.

3. Do you prefer to do worksheets in the classroom or at home? Why?

4. What other activities are you going to do in your Math class to let
you enjoy while learning?

METHODOLOGY
A. DATA ANALYSIS
• The respondents are those students who are having grades in Math of
below 80% on the Midterm – First Semester of this school year.
• The respondents’ Midterm and Final grades on the First Semester of this
school year will be collected to be used as their profile of academic
performances of the respondents. The Mean is the statistical tool to be
used to compare the results.
• The Pre-test and Post-test data will be collected to compare the
difference of the mastery level on performing the operations of integers
before and after the interventions. The t-test is to be used to know the
difference.
• The responses of the interview will be analyzed to know the perceptions
of the respondents about the interventions.
04/15/2023 16
B. SAMPLING

The respondents of this research consist of nineteen (19)

identified Grade 11 – Sapphire students who are having grades
of below 80% on the Midterm – First Semester of the School
Year 2019 – 2020 of Mambajao National High School,
Balintawak St., Poblacion, Mambajao, Camiguin.

04/15/2023 17
ETHICAL ISSUES

• The researcher has a dilemma whether the respondents may

fully participate this study. It is how to encourage them to
take part of the said study.
• It might be that some of these students are not interested to
extend their time and effort to do their tasks.
• If a student is not confident of his/her capacity of doing that
tasks given by the researcher.

04/15/2023 18
PLAN FOR DATA ANALYSIS

• The data for academic performances of Midterm and Final will be

analyzed using the
• The researcher will conduct Pre-test and Post-test to determine the
difference of their mastery level on operations of integers.
