system

Introduction

 This study investigates the feasibility, challenges, benefits and risks of blockchain technology in
education, with a focus on the application of the blockchain to formal and non-formal credentials .

 It is an exploratory study which is aimed at policy makers and a non-specialist audience The
application of blockchain to education is extremely new – with little peer-reviewed published
literature in the area.
Challenges

Challenge Description

Legal EU’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and California’s Consumer Privacy
Act of 2018 (CCPA) may impose limitations on how personal data is transacted on the
blockchain. Definitions of “personal data” also remain vague in legislation.

Scalability The relatively slow speed of blockchain transactions may impose bottlenecks when it
comes to scaling blockchain-in-education solutions worldwide.
Challenges(contd.)

Challenge Description

Data privacy and security Ensuring privacy while providing security on the blockchain may be very difficult to
achieve.

Market adoption Lack of trust in the technology and lack of knowledge on how to harness the potential
of blockchain-in-education solutions may lead to a slow market adoption of such
innovations.

Innovation The relative immaturity of blockchain technologies may influence the success rate of
blockchain-in-education solutions.

 Plagiarism Check
 Newmarket for Digital Assets
Pros

Some of the areas in the education industry where Blockchain could have an impact on how things are done
include:

Increased visibility :

 The immutable ledger technology of blockchain produces a chronological record of real-time events. This
is excellent for checking transcripts, displaying a complete report card, and keeping students up to date on
their progress.

 When a student submits their assignment via blockchain, they can't "lose" it or claim it was lost by the
teacher.
Pros (contd.)

Accountability with smart contracts:

 Smart contracts will soon be available to teachers, university officials, and students. Students and teachers, for example,
could sign a digital agreement outlining the limitations of an assignment, as well as the due date and grading deadline.

 Smart contracts can potentially be used to pay off student loans.

Lowering the Cost of Education

 In addition to its potential to support lifelong learning, blockchain technology might be used to enable universal access
to open educational resources, such as books, podcasts, and films, which are available in the public domain and are free
to use redistribute.
Pros (contd)

 In a public network, blockchain allows these resources to be shared inexpensively and

securely.
Cons

Despite the potential benefits of blockchain, its adoption in the area is still restricted. Much of this apprehension may
be due to the difficulties of deploying the technology, which include issues of security, scalability, adoption rate, and
cost.

Rate of Adoption :

 Blockchain, like other technology before it, can only succeed if enough institutions and employers trust it;
graduates will only benefit from ownership of their credentials if the schools or firms to whom they are applying
accept their legitimacy.
Cons (contd)

Scalability :

 Educational institutions have a lot of data about their students and graduates, which might make blockchain
scalability a problem. Because each transaction requires peer-to-peer verification, the number of blocks required
grows as the breadth of data involved grows.

Cost :

 Although it can save money in other areas, adopting and implementing new technology is expensive. The cost of
computer power and the cost of modifying current infrastructure can quickly pile up.
Cons (contd)

Security :

 Though one of blockchain's distinguishing characteristics is security, this does not imply that it is impenetrable.

 Because the information saved on the blockchain is so sensitive - students' educational records and academic
credentials — institutions must be careful

what data they store and how they preserve it.

Future Scope

While many of the applications of blockchain technology cannot yet be imagined, we find that within the educational
sphere, the following areas are most likely to be impacted by the adoption of blockchain technology in the near future:

 Blockchain technology will accelerate the end of a paper-based system for certificates.

 Any kinds of certificates issued by educational organisations, in particularqualifications and records of

achievement, can be permanently and reliably secured using blockchain technology.
Future Scope (contd)

 Blockchain technology allows for users to be able to automatically verify the validity of certificates directly against
the blockchain, without the need to contact the organisation that originally issued them.

 Thus, it will likely remove the need for educational

organisations to validate credentials.

Conclusion

 This study aims to respond two key research questions. First, how can blockchain technology improve the
performance of educational institutions and student learning Second, what are the impediments of blockchain
implementation within the education sector.

 In parallel, challenges were discussed across a wide range of areas: legal, scalability, data privacy and security,
market adoption, and innovation.
