1. C2H6O, Ethanol (MM= 64.

1 g/mol) is synthesized by reacting

ethylene, C2H4 (MM= 28.1g/mol) with water according to the following
equation
C2 H 4 + H 2 O  C2 H 6 O

How many grams of ethanol are formed from 14 g of ethylene?

a. From this question, what substance has been weighed? Ans. C2H4
b. What substance is sought for? Ans. C2H6O
Solution: Method I, using the mole- mole relationship in the balanced equation:

grams C2H6O = 14 g C2H4 x x x = 23 g C2H6O

Solution Method II, using the Gravimetric Factor (GF), using C as the tie substance. The
number of moles C in the numerator and denominator should be the same.

grams ethanol = 14g C2H4 x = 14g x = 23 g C2H6O

Note: In the GF , the tie substance is C (carbon) ; the number of moles C

in the numerator and denominator are equal. In the GF, the number of moles of
the tie substance in the numerator and denominator should be the same.
• 2] 60.0 grams of water are produced in the combustion of ethane,
C2H6. How many grams of ethane are used?
a) What is sought for? Ethane, C2H6
b) What was weighed? H20
c ) What is the gravimetric factor? =
d) grams ethane used = grams of water produced x GF
= 60 g H2O x
= 60 x = 33.33 g
Weighed Sought For Tie Substance GF Value of the GF
1. BaSO4 SO3 S
2. Fe2O3 Fe3O4 Fe
3. Mg2P2O7 MgO Mg
4. Mg2P2O7 P2O3 P

Note: The GF is the ratio of the molar masses of the substance sought for and the substance weighed.
