COSTA RICA

1824 - SLAVERY

• Slavery was abolishes throughout the costa Rican territory since 1824
• The first Blacks that arrived to Costa Rica came with the Spanish
conquistadors. Slave trade was common in all the countries conquered by
Spain, and in Costa Rica the first Blacks seem to have come from specific
sources in Africa Equatorial and Western regions.
• Though Costa Rica had its own version of slavery from approximately 1502 to
1824, there was never a fully viable cash crop plantation system – that is,
outside of the small spike in cacao production between 1690-1740, which saw
the largest influx of slaves in Costa Rica
1828 - ANNEXATION

• The Partido de Nicoya was annexed to Costa Rica. Its territory today is part of thee
Province of Guancastle.
• It happened on Monday 25th July
• It is celebrated in costa Rica by parades, folk dance, typical and traditional music,
cattle shows and food and much more.
• Annexation means the act of annexing something or the state of being annexed : the
addition of an area or region to a country, state, etc.
• “Annexation” is acquiring territory by force and is a flagrant violation of international
law. As such it can have no effect on the legal status of the territory, which remains de
jure occupied
1856 – THE BATTLE OF RIVAS

• The battle of Rivas was fought in which the national hero named Juan
Santamaria had died.
• It was a very important battle for costa Rica because they suffered a human and
economic loses but even though they had to face so much loses, the winner was
costa Rica and had forced William walker to leave the country who was trying
to invade Costa Rica but had failed to.
1884 – ELECTRIC LIGHTING

• The city of San Jose becomes the first Latin American city and third in the
world to have an electric lighting.
• It happened on the august 9th in 1884
• as the electrical service was inaugurated in San José at 6:15 p.m. The plant was
located in Barrio Aranjuez and its 75 horsepower generated 50 kilowatts to
power 25 charcoal lamps.
1948 – CIVIL WAR

• The civil war had developed because of the congress annulled the elections that
Otilito Ulate Blanco won over the Rafael Calderon Guradia.
• The civil war had lasted for over 44 days; from March 12th 1948 to April 24
1948
• However, Since 1949, Costa Rica became the first country in the world to
abolish the army. The decision gave institutional strength to the regime of
civility of Costa Rica's political life.
