Arctic Fox

MIRA – MOSTAFA
In winter they are white to blend in with the snow,
while in the summer they change to brown! The
Arctic fox is found throughout the entire
Arctic tundra, through Alaska,
Canada, Greenland, Russia, Norway, Scandinavia,
and even Iceland, where it is the only native land
mammal.
Arctic foxes generally eat any
small animal they can find,
including hares, birds, eggs,
fish and especially lemmings.
They eat the food left by larger
predators such as wolves and
polar bears, and in times of
scarcity even eat their feces.
Why are Arctic foxes endangered?
Several reasons are contributing to the endangered
status of the Arctic fox, including the poor
availability of lemmings as prey. Also, the spread of
the predator red fox in Arctic fox habitats is also a
factor. Slowdowns in Arctic fox breeding is leading
the population to decrease . Besides, it have been
overhunted by humans in the past due to its
expensive and beautiful fur.
The arctic fox was overhunted in the past until
the law nowadays saved it. However, it is still
endangered. It was hunted a lot due to its rare
and expensive fur. Arctic fox is covered with
thick white fur during the winter and grey-
brownish fur during the summer. Seasonal
variations in the color of the fur ensure
camouflage (animal easily blends with its
habitats).
The world population of Arctic Foxes is in
the order of several hundred
thousand animals which is a low number
based on the old number of population. We
should try our best to increase this number
of population or else arctic foxes are going
to become extinct.
