•Person #1: You are in your first year at
university, and you live a plane ride away
from your family. Your father is a bit
overprotective and insists that you call him
twice a week to check in. You are sure that
you are doing just fine and that you don’t
need his help. Your dad calls you out of the
blue because you have not called him for a
week. Try to set some clear boundaries of
what does or does not work for you.
• Person #2: You are the father of a
brand-new university student.
When you were young, you went to
college close to home to support
your parents. But as things have
changed, so has your child. He is
off in another country now, and it is
hard to go to see him. You want him
to stay in touch so that you know
that he is safe. You can feel your
child pulling away. He hasn’t called
yet this week, and you are worried.
