What is a
social group?
 A group is where people have the chance to
interact with other people and think of
themselves as belonging together.

 The group exists as long as individuals are


interested in belonging to it.
A social group is two or more
people who identify with and
engage with each other (Macionis,
2012)
A social group is distinct from an aggregate,
which consists of people who are temporarily
grouped together in an area, perhaps even
performing the same things, but do not
consider themselves to be members of the
same group.
TYPES OF
GROUPS
ACCORDING TO
INFLUENCE
Primary
Groups
those which are small but intimate, direct access and
interaction with each other, and emotional bond.
A small social group whose members share a personal
and lasting relationship. (Charles Horton Cooley)
It plays a significant role in an individual's
development.
 Relationships formed are often long-lasting and have
goals in themselves.
Examples: Family, Friends, Love relationships
Secondary
Groups
formed to perform a specific purpose, members interact
for the accomplishment of purpose, usually formal and
impersonal -possible to form primary groups.
Large clusters of people who have a mutually shared
purpose, often aiming to complete tasks.
It sometimes involves weak emotional and
interpersonal ties compared to the primary group.
Interacts on a less personal level than in a primary
group, and their relationship are temporary.
Examples:
School/class
Workplace
Civic organizations (Phil. Coconut authority,
NFA, Phil Tobacco Admin., National Dairy
Authority)
College classes
Reference
Groups
A reference group is a group or social
category that an individual uses to
help define beliefs, attitudes, and
values and to guide behavior.
REFERENCE GROUPS AS IDENTITY GROUPS

Reference In-Group: social groups to which an Fraternity
Group individual feels he/she belongs. One Sorority
feels loyalty and respect for these
groups.
Out-group: social groups that an Sports team

Types of Reference Group
●A normative reference group influences your
norms, attitudes, and values through direct
interaction.
●A comparative reference group is a group of
individuals whom you compare yourself
against and may strive to be like.

 a theoretical construct useful in the social
sciences to study relationships between
individuals, groups, organizations, or even
entire societies.
Examples.
 Civil society organizations
 Non-government organizations
A social network is a sociological
concept that refers to the social
relationships that exist between
network parts and individuals.

focusing on the importance of social
groups in society.
General Guidelines
1. Group of five (5) & below.
2. Use 1/8 illustration board.
3. “Performance Task 5 in UCSP (Poster & Slogan)
4. Top 3 Best Poster and Slogan will be given an award.
5. Group activity will be done in school on
April 24, 2023.
Members will be the following:
 Illustration board; crayons, oil pastel,
water color/paint, pencil, art materials,
plastic cover, etc.
