Miriam Defensor Santiago


 ( June 15, 1945 – September 29, 2016) 
Miriam Defensor-Santiago was a Filipino scholar, academic,
lawyer, judge, author, and stateswoman who served in all
three branches of the Philippine government: judicial,
executive, and legislative. Defensor Santiago was named one
of The 100 Most Powerful Women in the World in 1997 by
The Australian.

She was known for being a long-serving Senator of the Republic


of the Philippines, an elected judge of the International Criminal
Court, and the sole female recipient of the Philippines' highest
national honor. Senator Santiago led an extraordinary battle
against corruption, political awareness and engaged citizenship. 
Miriam Defensor Santiago is a globally famous personality, because
of her legal brilliance and courageous example in fighting
corruption. In a nation where many public officials are charged with,
or suspected, of plunder, her honesty shines like a light in the
darkness. She was named one of The 100 Most Powerful Women
in the World in 1997. Defensor-Santiago was indeed a female icon
for the 21st century, earning the nickname the “Iron Lady of Asia,”
Her intellect, accomplishments, and outspokenness make her an
extraordinary role model to the youth, who continue to look up to
her today.

Wu Zhao (624–705), also known as Empress Wu ,  was the first and
only woman emperor of China. With her exceptional intelligence,
extraordinary competence in politics, and inordinate ambition, she

ruled as the “Holy and Divine Emperor” of the Second Zhou
Dynasty for fifteen years. Her remarkable political leadership is
recognized and is comparable in some ways to other notable women
in later periods of world history.

Under her 40-year reign, China grew larger, becoming one of the great
powers of the world, its culture and economy were revitalized, and
corruption in the court was reduced. Under Wu's rule, the government
oversaw projects such as reducing taxation and re-opening the Silk Road
to trade. Empress Wu is considered one of the greatest emperors
in Chinese history due to her strong leadership and effective
governance, which made China one of the world's most powerful
nations.

CHARACTERISTICS AS A LEADER?
• One thing they have in common is that they are both exceptional female politicians and among
the most influential women in history. They are strong, vocal, and highly intelligent. They have
the characteristic of not being afraid to express their opinions to those they criticize.
• Their strong personalities and determination to succeed in male-dominated fields. They both
overcame significant obstacles to achieve their goals and were willing to take on powerful
opponents to get what they wanted. They were also both highly intelligent and strategic thinkers
who were able to navigate complex political landscapes to achieve their objectives.
• Another common characteristic is their commitment to justice and fairness. Miriam Defensor
Santiago was known for her advocacy for human rights and her opposition to corruption, while
Empress Wu Zetian was known for her reforms to the legal system and her efforts to improve the
lives of her subjects.
