MEN’S REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH

Prostate Cancer
Prostate Gland
 It is located below the bladder, above the
pelvic floor muscles, and in front of the
rectum.

 The prostate reaches its mature size during

puberty and will keep its walnut size until
the man is in his late forties or early fifties.
After this age, it slowly begins to enlarge.

 The prostate, which surrounds the urethra,

is made up of glandular, stromal
(supportive) tissue, and smooth muscles
fused within a capsule.
Prostate Gland’s Function
The most important is producing seminal fluid,
which is a component of semen. It also plays a
role in hormone production and helps regulate
urine flow.
Prostate Cancer
 It is marked by an uncontrolled
(malignant) growth of cells in the
prostate gland.
Cause/s
- It's not clear what causes prostate cancer.
- Doctors know that prostate cancer begins when cells in the prostate
develop changes in their DNA. A cell's DNA contains the instructions that tell
a cell what to do. The changes tell the cells to grow and divide more rapidly
than normal cells do. The abnormal cells continue living, when other cells
would die.
- The accumulating abnormal cells form a tumor that can grow to invade
nearby tissue. In time, some abnormal cells can break away and spread
(metastasize) to other parts of the body.
