1. Sticks and Stone
• The first people used
their fingers in
counting. They also
used sticks, ropes and
stones to make
counting easier.
2. Abacus
• 4000 years ago,
Chinese started using
the abacus for counting
and calculating.
3. Napier’s Bones
• 1612, John Napier from
Scotland invented a
device made of rods. Its
was used to multiply and
divide numbers. The
device was called
Napier’s bones.
4. Pascaline
• 1642, Blaise Pascal a
mathematician from
France, invented a
calculating machine.
• He used the machine to
help his father compute
tax collection.
5. Stepped Reckoner
• 1674, Gottfried Wilhelm
Leibnitz, a German
mathematician, invented a
calculating machine.
• The machine could add,
subtract, multiply and
divide.
6. Analytical Engine
• 1833, was designed by
Charles Babbage.
• Lady Ada Augusta Lovelace
worked closely with Babbage
in creating programs and
instructions.
• Babbage – The Father of
Computers.
7. Hollerith’s tabulating Machine
• 1890, Herman Hollerith, an
American businessman.
• The machine used punched
cards to record, arrange, and
store data.
• Used to count the number of
people who lived in the
United States.
8. First Electronic Computer
• 1946, Electronic
Numerical Integrator and
Computer (ENIAC)
• It helped design weapons.
THE SHRINKING
COMPUTER
SUPERCOMPUTER
• The most powerful and
expensive computers. They
are also the fastest.
• It can be found in large
businesses involved in Car
design, special effects for
movies, weather forecasting
and weapons research.
MAINFRAME COMPUTERS
• Can served thousands of
people and do many jobs at
the same time.
• It can be found in large
companies that conduct
experiments and specialized
researches.
MIDRANGE COMPUTERS
• Smaller and less powerful
than mainframes. They
can be used by hundreds
or thousands users at the
same time.
PERSONAL COMPUTERS
• Are made to fit on a desktop
for a single person’s use.
• Laptops, notebooks, and
palmtops are all PC’s. They
vary in size.
PERSONAL COMPUTERS
• Palmtops are the smallest PCs
available and are of the same
size as calculators.
