Based on the activity, answer the following questions:

1. What are the sources of water

shown in the pictures.
2. What pictures show freshwater?
seawater? underground water?
3. What are the uses of these water
sources?
4. Why do you think it is important to
conserve these water sources?
Remember
•Life is possible on earth due to the
presence of water.
Nearly three-fourths of the earth’s
surface is covered with water. Water is
also found below the earth’s surface. It
is present in air in the form of water
vapor.
Kinds of
Water
•Seawater. It is salty
which contains plenty
of salt found in the sea
and oceans. It is also
called hard water.
•Freshwater. It is also called
surface water. Water present on
the surface of the earth in the form
of oceans, rivers, lakes, ponds and
streams. The water in rivers and
lakes mostly from rain. It does not
contain salt. It is found in rivers,
lakes, creeks, and ponds.
•Groundwater. It is found beneath the
earth’s surface. It comes from water that
seeps into the ground. These accumulates
in the underground layer called water table.
It is the cleanest water and contain plenty of
dissolved minerals which the human body
needs. Sometimes due to high pressure,
this water sprouts out in the form of springs.
It can be obtained by digging wells, sinking
tube wells, etc.
Other Sources of Water

clouds- it comes from evaporated

water.
iceberg - these are solid water found
only in very cold countries.
glaciers- a huge mass of ice that
moves slowly over land.
Uses of Freshwater
•It used for cleaning, washing, bathing,
preparing food and other household uses.
•Sustains plant and animal life.
•For recreation.
•Use as routes for transportation like boats.
•For irrigation of farms.
Uses of Seawater
•It produces 80% of the oxygen we breathe
because of planktons, the tiny organisms that
live in the oceans and seas.
•The habitat of aquatic plants and animals.
•For recreation.
•Routes for local and international
transportation and marine navigation.
Uses of Groundwater
•Groundwater is the safe source of water and
considered the cleanest water because it contains
plenty of dissolved minerals which the human body
needs.
•It also helps grow our food and is used for irrigation
to grow crops.
•Groundwater is an important component in many
industrial processes. It is a source of recharge for
lakes, rivers, and wetlands.

Based on the activity, answer the following
questions:
1. Where does water come as shown in the
diagram?
2. What are the processes involved in the
water cycle?
3. What is the role of the sun in the water
cycle?
4. How animals and humans participate in the
water cycle?
5. Why do you think water cycle important?
You may think that every drop of rain that falls from the sky, or
each glass of water that you drink, is brand new, but it has always
been here and is a part of the water cycle.
Water cycle is a continuous process of changing liquid water
into water vapor when heated and back to liquid when cooled.
The sun plays a major role in the water cycle. It heats up the
bodies of water covering the earth. When bodies of water are
heated, evaporation occurs. Evaporation is the change of liquid
to water vapor. Water particles are released from the leaves of
plants through transpiration. Animals and humans give off water
particles when they perspire during respirationwhich evaporate in
the atmosphere in lesser amounts.
The water vapor condenses as it reaches the atmosphere and
mixes with other water vapor in the process called condensation.
They then fall as precipitate like rain, hail, and snow. Such
process is called precipitation.
A summary of the water cycle
•The heat of the sun provides energy to make the water cycle
work.
•The sun evaporates water from the oceans into water vapor.
•This invisible vapor rises into the atmosphere, where the air is
colder.
•The colder air causes water vapor to condense into water
droplets and clouds.
•In the atmosphere, air currents move clouds all around the Earth.
•Water drops form in clouds, which then fall to Earth as
precipitation (rain and snow).
•In cold climates, precipitation builds up as snow, ice, and
glaciers.
•Snow can melt, becoming runoff, which flows into rivers, the
oceans, and into the ground.
•Some ice evaporates directly into the air, skipping the melting phase
(sublimation).
•Rainfall on land flows downhill as runoff, providing water to lakes,
rivers, and the oceans.
•Some rain soaks into the ground, as infiltration, and, if deep enough,
becomes groundwater.
•Water from lakes and rivers can seep into the ground.
•Water moves underground because of gravity and pressure.
•Groundwater close to the land surface is taken up by plants.
•Some groundwater seeps into rivers and lakes, and can flow to the
surface as springs.
•Some groundwater goes very deep into the ground and stays there for a
long time.
•Groundwater flows into the oceans, keeping the water cycle going.
Some of the Importance of water cycle to
living things:
•Human-Improved hygiene practices
•Animal- Healthy animal growth
•Plants-Healthy plant growth
•Environment-Increased crop yield Increased
water storage
