Case Management Nurse

Educational Requirements

 Must be registered nurse with ADN or BSN

 American-Association of Critical Care Nurses (AACN) recently stated that these


nurses should have at the very least, a BSN

 Some hospitals and agencies now require for these nurses have an extended
certification such as an MSN or even a Doctorate

Specific Responsibilities

 This nurse works with both the patient and the healthcare provider to determine
what specific care is required and the best options for giving quality care.

 Usually have multiple patients and one time, but their patients are typically
“those who require additional monitoring and follow-up, as well as high risk
patients.”
 These patients include those with chronic conditions such as heart disease,
seizures, COPD, and diabetes

Advantages

 Being an advocate for the patient


 Working in a highly professional setting
 Flexible schedules
 Working independently

Salary

 Median pay is about $64,000 per year

 Varies depending on location and years of experience the nurse has

 “The largest hospitals tend to offer the highest salaries and the lowest salaries are
offered to those who work for voluntary organizations.”
Schedule

 These nurses have a higher salary than a registered nurse, therefore, their work hours are
more flexible

 Can work from home or in the hospital setting

 Schedules can be Monday-Friday 8 hour shifts or weekend shifts for 12 hours

 Schedule is impacted by the nurse's experience


Case Management Nursing Process

 “An adapted version of the nursing process”

 The nursing process is used for the care of every patient by all nurses, whereas
the case management process is used only by case managers on a select group of
patients that meet specific criteria.
