WHAT IS SLE?
Itis a chronic ,multisystemic autoimmune
disease that results from immune system
mediated tissue damage and is characterized
by the presence of broad spectrum
autoantibodies.

Itpredominantly affects young women between


20 to 30 years, with female to male ratio of 9:1.
HISTORY
 Lupus is the latin word for “Wolf”.
 Erythomatosus means “Red rashes”. Dr.
Cazenave discovered red rashes on patients face that
looked like wolf bites. He named the rash Discoid
Lupus Erythematosus[DLE].

 Then Sir William Osler recognized that many people


with lupus had a disease involving not only the skin but
many other organs or systems. He named Systemic
Lupus Erythematosus[SLE].
