What is knowledge?
To better define it, we must distinguish:

Data VS Information VS Knowledge

Data - the lowest level in the value chain

- a set of discrete, objective facts about events
- a structured record of transactions
- its symbolic nature permits ease of storage in, and
processing by, computers

Information - the middle level in the value chain

- a message, usually in the form of a document,
or audible and visible communication
- data endowed with relevance and purpose

Note that:
The recipient determines if the packet
received is data or information, and
this is dependent on the impact on his
or her perception, judgment or
behavior.

“Knowledge is a fluid mix of framed experience, values, contextual

information, and expert insight that provides a framework for
evaluating and incorporating new experiences and information. It
originates and is applied in the minds of knowers. In organizations, it
often becomes embedded not only in documents or repositories but
also in organizational routines, processes, practices, and norms.”
- Davenport & Prusak (1998)

Let’s rack our brains!

1. Demonstrate the progression/interface

from/among data, information, and knowledge
using a single, simple, subject matter.

2. Create a scenario whereby an interface among

data, information, and knowledge may be shown.

Example:
Scenario: My enemy at the library
Data: I am at the library. I see Mr/Ms E
I notice her/him sneaking a snack into her/his mouth.
Information: S/he is violating the rules by eating inside the
library.
Knowledge: Such behavior must be reported to the librarian.

1. Pick a scenario
2. Tell us an anecdote with the interface among
data, information and knowledge.
Knowledge Management
March 22, 2022

Discussion Flow
1. What is the scenario?
2. Tell us your anecdote.
3. What piece of information was crucial in the
development of the anecdote?
4. Explain how the datum/data interfaced with
information and then with knowledge.

Next meeting:

1. How do you transform data into information, and

information into knowledge?
2. What are the two (2) distinct types of knowledge?
3. What are the four (4) ways by which we could
create knowledge?
