WHAT IS ADVERB?
- Adverb is a word that modifies a verb in a sentence.
This signifies that you can use an adverb to give a
detailed account of an action or event.

-Although there is a similarity between adjectives


and adverbs, the two are different. Adverbs are easily
identifiable as most of them end in -ly, but some do
not.
ADVERBS

In the parts of speech adverb plays an important


role.
let us see what is it’s role.....
ADVERBS

ADVERB:
-Basically, most adverbs tell you how, where or
when some thing is done. In other words, they
describe the manner, place or time of an action.
ADVERB

Commonly adverbs are


formed from adjectives.
ADVERB
Many adverbs end with ly. You make these adverbs
by adding ly to adjectives.
Note:
Some words that end in ly are not adverbs.
Some adjectives en in ly too. For
Example:
1. Sam was feeling very lonely.
2. She was wearing a lovely dress.
3. It was a very lively party.
KINDS OF ADVERBS
 It describes in which manner an action is done.
Manner

 It describes where an action is done.


Place

It describes when an action is done.


Time

 It shows how many times an action is done.


Frequency

 It describes the purpose or reason for the action.

Quantity/Degree  Itshows how much or in what degree
or to what extent.

ADVERBS OF PLACE
Some adverbs and adverb phrases answer the question
“where?”.
They are called adverbs of place.
Examples:
@ The boys are playing upstairs.
@ The dog is in the garden.
@ We’re going to New York City on our school trip.
@ It’s very sunny but cold outside.
ADVERB OF PLACE

Example:
@ I’ve lived here for about two years.
@ English and German are closely.
@ Is marke still in the bed.
@ His children go everywhere with him.
ADVERBS OF MANNER
Some adverbs and adverb phrases describe the way people do
things.

Examples:
@ The girls answered all the questions carefully.

@ He was driving carelessly.


@ The plane landed safety.
@ Azumi plays guitar skillfully.
ADVERB MANNER
 Examples:

@They watched Carefully.


@ The flower was beautifully made up.
@ She seemed faintly.
@ The team played wonderfully.
ADVERBS OF FREQUENCY
Some adverbs and adverb phrases answer the question
“ how often an action is done” They are called adverbs of
frequency.
Examples:
@ The children always go to school on the bus.
@ I’ll never make that mistake again.
@ I clean my bedroom every day.
@ Dad polishes his shoes twice a week.
ADVERBS OF TIME
Some adverbs and adverb phrases answer the question
“when?”.
They are called adverbs of time.

Examples:
@ The train has already left.
@ We moved into our new house lastt week.
@ Our favorite T.V programs starts at 6’o clock.
@ I’m going to myb new school tomorrow.
ADVERBS OF TIME
Example:
@ We shall now begin to work.
@ He called here a few minutes ago.
@ I have spoken to him yesterday.
@ He comes here daily.
@ Mr. Michael Angelo formerly lived here.
ADVERBS OF QUANTITY OR
DEGREE
It shows how much, or in what degree or to
what extent.
Examples:

* He was too careless.


* The sea is very stormy.
* I am rather busy.
* I am fully prepared.
ADVERBS OF REASON
The adverb which tells about a reason is called
adverb of reason.
Examples:
@ He is hence unable to refute the charge.

@ He therefore left school


ADVERB OF AFFIRMATION AND
NEGATION

Which says yes if it is yes and no if it is no.

Examples:
@ I don’t know
@ Surely you are mistaken.
@ He certainly went.
EXAMPLES OF ADVERBS
@ She sings sweetly.
@ He speaks quite clearly.
@ She shouts loudly.
@ She smiled cheerfully.
@ The traffic was moving slowly.
@ She writes neatly.
@ We waited patiently to see the doctor.
Some ex, of adverbs of different kinds:

Tontoise walks slowly (manner)


We will have our semester exams on April 1st week (time)
The accident happened near the Highway(place)
At least twice a week I used to go for temple (frequency)
We all go for a picnic just for enjoyment (purpose)
The sea is is very stormy (degree/ quantity)

PREPOSITION
A preposition links nouns, pronouns and phrases to other
words in sentence. The word or phrase that the preposition
introduces is called the object of the preposition.

Simple Preposition
Compound Preposition

Participle Preposition
Phrase Preposition
SIMPLE PREPOSITION

A simple preposition is a word like in, on, at, about, of,


for, to etc.

For example:
They are waiting for the bus.
COMPOUND PREPOSITION

Compound preposition is a word like without, within,


inside, outside, between etc.

For example:
The ship was at the point of break in two.
DOUBLE PREPOSITION

Double preposition is a word like outside of, out of, from


behind etc.

For example:
It is up to us to find a way out.
PARTICIPLE PREPOSITION

Participlepreposition is a word like concerning, not with


standing, pending etc.

For example:
She works during the day and studies at night.
PHRASE PREPOSITION
Phrase preposition is a phrase like because of, by mean
of, with regard to etc.

For example:
He walked as far as he could.
GAME
Hot Adverb
Mechanics:
1. Place kids in a large circle, either on the floor or at their desks.
2. Write a sentence with one adverb on the board (for example, “I dance slowly.”)
3. Model the action in front of the class.
4. Have the class pass the ball along the circle as music plays.
5. Stop the music. Change the adverb in the sentence by choosing a new one
from a list of adverbs (for ex. “I dance happily”.)
6. The student holding the ball performs the action in the middle of the circle. If
they’re incorrect or don’t want to perform, they’re out.
7. Continue playing until you run out of adverbs or one student is left.
