Mean of the Data Set
Mean= Sum of the values/Total number of
6,7,7,7,8,8,8,8.5,8.5.8.5,8.5,
Values 9,9,9,9,9,9,9,9.5
For example: Find the mean of 6,7,8,9,10… Find the mean= Sum of the

Find then Mean, Mode and Median

The mean which is represented by X , The letter X with a dash over it pronounced as X bar is when all the
values in the data set are added then divided by the total number of values. ∑ - known as sigma notation which
represents the sum of values

Median= The middle value in the data set.

To find the position we can divide the number of values in the data set which would be 19/2=9.5. This does not
mean that 9.5 is the median, it means that the value in that position will be median. In other words the median is
the 9.5th position or mid-way between values on the left and right 6,7,7,7,8,8,8,8.5,8.5.8.5,8.5, 9,9,9,9,9,9,9,9.5
There are equally 9 values on either then the value ½ way between would be the median which is 8.5

9 llll ll=7 9*7=63 7+11=18
9.5 l=1 9.5*1=9.5 1+18=19

Median= The middle value in the data set.

To find the position we can divide the number of values in the data set which would be 19/2=9.5. This does not mean that 9.5
is the median, it means that the value in that position will be the median.
6,7,7,7,8,8,8,8.5,8.5.8.5,8.5, 9,9,9,9,9,9,9,9.5
The cumulative frequency can be used to find the median. As you can see from shoes size 6-8 would take up 7 positions and
this doesn’t account for the 9.5th position. Then 8.5 would occupy positions 8-11 and 9.5 th position would fall in between
making 8.5 the median value

a) Construct a frequency table for the scores.

b) Find f(x).

c) Find the mean, mode, median and range.

Solution Mean

Shooting Scores (x) Frequency F(x) Cumulative frequency (cf)
0 5 0*5=0 5
1 12 1*12=12 5+12=17
2 3 2*3=6 3+17=20
3 9 3*9=27 9+20=29
4 8 4*8=32 29+8=37
5 4 5*4=20 37+4=41
6 5 6*5=30 41+5=46
7 4 7*4=28 46+4=50
Total ∑=50 ∑=155
Solution [Median]
Frequency Table
Shooting Scores (x) Frequency F(x) Cumulative frequency (cf)
0 5 0*5=0 5
1 12 1*12=12 5+12=17
2 3 2*3=6 3+17=20
3 9 3*9=27 9+20=29
4 8 4*8=32 29+8=37
5 4 5*4=20 37+4=41
6 5 6*5=30 41+5=46
7 4 7*4=28 46+4=50
Total ∑=50 ∑=155

The median will fall 50/2= 25th position. According to the cf, the 21st -29th position would be at shooting
score 3, making 3 the median since 25 would fall in between that.
Solution [Mode]
Frequency Table
Shooting Scores (x) Frequency F(x) Cumulative frequency (cf)
0 5 0*5=0 5
1 12 1*12=12 5+12=17
2 3 2*3=6 3+17=20
3 9 3*9=27 9+20=29
4 8 4*8=32 29+8=37
5 4 5*4=20 37+4=41
6 5 6*5=30 41+5=46
7 4 7*4=28 46+4=50
Total ∑=50 ∑=155

The mode would be shooting score 1 since it occurred 12 times.
