Water Pollution

Water pollution is the contamination of

water sources by substances which make
The water unusable for drinking, cooking,
cleaning, swimming and other activities.
It also leads to disease such as cholera
and diarrhea .
Types of pollutants

Thermal Pollution Chemical Pollution Biological Pollution

Thermal Pollution
Water pollution that is caused by the
discharged waste water after passing
through many technical processes. It is very hot and on
entering natural water body, it
increases the growth of harmful biological
organisms. Iron and steel industries are
mainly responsible for it.
Chemical Pollution

Water pollution that is caused by a

large amount of industrial chemicals
which includes chemicals from paint,
textile and dyestuff industry is called
chemical pollution. Various acid and
salt solutions like mercury and lead
enter into water when discharged as industrial
wastes
Biological Pollution

Water Pollution that is caused by

The human and animal excreta,
when washed by rain water. It
contaminates the water bodies. It
affects the human health by the
intake of the contaminated water
Steps to avoid water pollution

• Harmful wastes such as oils and chemicals should not enter into water.
• Proper toilets and sewage should be used to prevent human excreta,
• containing disease
• causing organisms to enter into the water.
• Washing of clothes and bathing should be avoided near water sources.
• Planting od trees near water sources including river banks also
• minimize pollution
• To minimize thermal pollution the water should be cooled before being discharged
as waste.
• Man should be made aware through various awareness programmes
• and media about the
• harmful effects of water pollution and ways to control it.
