HOLIDAYS

 There are 12 federal holidays in the US. The states
observe federal public holidays. These are Thanksgiving
Day, Independence Day, Christmas, New Year’s Day,
Memorial Day, Columbus Day and some others.
NEW YEAR’S DAY

 In the United States, the legal holiday is January first,


but Americans begin celebrating on December 31.
CHRISTMAS DAY
 The United States of America has many different
traditions and ways that people celebrate Christmas,
because of its multi-cultural nature.
THE EASTER
 Religion aside, the United States celebrates Easter with
egg hunts and rolls, parades, and visits from the Easter
Bunny
WASHINGTON’S BIRTHDAY
 The birthday of George Washington, the first president of
the United States, has been a legal holiday since 1885.
MEMORIAL DAY
 On this day Americans honor the servicemen who gave
their lives in past wars.
INDEPENDENCE DAY
 On July 4th 1776, the 13 colonies of North America
signed the Declaration of Independence. This said
that they were no longer under the control of
Great Britain, and were an independent country..
LABOR DAY
 Labor Day is a United States federal holiday observed
on the first Monday in September
COLUMBUS DAY
 Throughout most of the US Columbus Day, the
anniversary of the landing of Christopher Columbus
in the New World on the second Monday in October.
VETERAN’S DAY
 Americans still give thanks for peace on
Veterans’ Day.
THANKSGIVING DAY
 If it hadn’t been for the Indians, there might not have
been the first Thanksgiving.  In 1863 president
Lincoln issued a proclamation declaring
Thanksgiving a federal holiday.
ST. VALENTINE’S DAY

 On this day, Americans give special symbolic gifts to


people they love.
HALLOWEEN DAY
 On Halloween, American children dress up in funny or
scary costumes and go "trick or treating" by knocking on
doors in their neighborhood.
 The population of the United States is made up of people
of very many nationalities. Their predecessors came to
America from different countries, and they brought their
native celebrations with them.
