This knowledge community is using new media to sustain itself because it is a internet based community where teachers can come together to share a similar interest. In the past teachers could only communicate with the teachers within the same school or district. Using this new media, teachers are able to communicate with other teachers around the world without leaving their classroom.

Users can also communicate via a Message Board and are able to express their thoughts and feelings by writing journals which are posted on the site.

Internet Writing Workshop is using new media to sustain itself because it is using the internet and internet advertising to create a writing community. Using the internet allows writers from all areas to come together. Without this new media, this would not be possible. Without the internet, writers would have to stop what they are working on, print it, and bring it to a formal discussion where everyone would meet at a location to discuss their work. This is difficult if you dont live in a community with other writers with the same interest.
