Association of Southeast Asian
Nations (ASEAN)
• The Association of Southeast Asian Nations
(ASEAN) was established on 8 August 1967 in
Bangkok, Thailand with the signing of the
ASEAN Decleration (Bangkok Decleration ) by
the Founding Fathers of ASEAN: Indonesia ,
Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore and Thailand.
Brunei Darussalam joined ASEAN on 7
January 1984, followed by Vietnam on 28 July
1995 , Lao PDR and Myanmar on 23 July
1997, and Cambodia on 30 April 1999, making
up what is today the ten members states of
ASEAN. The Headquarters of ASEAN is in
Jakarta, Indonesia.

• The Association of Southest Asian Nations


(ASEAN) is a regional organization of 10
Southeast Asian and Pacific Rim countries
whose governments collaborate to promote
socio-cultural , economic and political
advancement in the region.

• ASEAN is an official abserver of Asia-Pacific


Economic Cooperation (APEC) , A 21 member
ecoomic group that promotes free trade and
sustainable development in Pacific Rim
countries.
On 8 August 1967, five leaders- the Foreign
Ministers of Indonesia , Malaysia, the
Philippines , Singapore, and Thailand. Sat down
together in the main hall of the Department of
Foreign Affairs building in Bangkok, Thailand
and signed a document. By virtue of that
document , the Association of Southeast Asian
Nations (ASEAN) was born.

The ASEAN states that the aims and purposes of the Association are:

1.To accelerate economic growth , social progress and cultural


development in the region , and
2.To promote regional peace and stability through abiding respect for
justice and the rule of law in the relationship among countries in the
region and adherence to the principles of the Unites Nations Charter.
The ASEAN Vision 2020 , adopted by the ASEAN Leaders on the 30th
Anniversary of ASEAN , agreed on a shared vision of ASEAN as a
concert of Southeast Asian Nations, outward looking, living in peace,
stability and prosperity, bonded together in partnership in dynamic
development and in a community of caring society.

In 2003 , the ASEAN Leaders resolved that an ASEAN community shall


be established comprising three pillars , namely, ASEAN Security
Community , ASEAN Economic Community and ASEAN Socio-Cultural
Community.
ASEAN Organs always strive to achieve ASEAN’s goals and objectives .
The Secretary-General of ASEAN and the ASEAN Secretariat shall
function as coordinator to facilitate effective decision-making within
and among ASEAN bodies . In addition, each ASEAN Member State
shall appoint a Permanent Representative to liaise with the Secretary-
General and ASEAN Secretariat.
