Preventive care and medication
• Isolate babies with SCID from young children outside the
family. They should not be taken to public places
• If the child with SCID cannot absorb food normally,
continuous intravenous feedings to maintain normal
nutrition should be considered.
• Live vaccines such as rotavirus, measles, live virus polio or
BCG vaccinations should not be given to infants with SCID
• A prophylactic treatment Trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole
should be given to all babies with SCID routinely to prevent
pneumonia until their T cell defect has been corrected.
