Soccer Game
- Class is divided into 2 teams A & B
- Each team will take turn to choose a question and guess the
word based on the given definition
- If one team fails to give the correct answer, the other team will
take that chance
- Whoever scores first will be the winner

CLIMATE CHANGE
What is Climate?
Climate is defined as an area's long-term weather patterns. The simplest
way to describe climate is to look at average temperature and precipitation
over time.

H
What is climate change?
Climate change is a change in the
pattern of weather, and related
changes in oceans, land surfaces and
ice sheets, that have come to define
Earth’s local, regional and global
climates and occurring over time
scales of decades or longer.

What are some causes of
climate change?

Work in groups of 4.
List as many as possible NATURAL
and ANTHROPOGENIC causes

H
NATURAL CAUSES

Sunspot and solar cycle Forest Fire Volcanic Eruption

Ocean Currents Meteorites

Sunspot and Solar cycle
Sunspot: a dark spot on the surface of
the sun that appears for a
few days or weeks and then disappears

Solar cycle: the cycle that the

Sun's magnetic field goes
through approximately every 11
years

  Ultraviolet radiation increases

dramatically during high sunspot
activity, which can have a large
effect on the Earth's atmosphere.
H
Ocean currents

In places where warm currents pass through,

seawater easily evaporates (due to high sea
temperature), form clouds and cause rain for nearby
areas ⟶ humid, rainy climate.

In contrast, in places where cool currents pass (low

sea temperature) water cannot evaporate and as a
result, nearby areas rarely get rain, such as the
Sahara Desert. ⟶ arid climate, little rain.

H
ANTHROPOGENIC CAUSES

Chemical Fertilizers Deforestation Increasing Vehicles

Coal mining releases methane, a

potent greenhouse gas. Methane
emissions from coalmines has a
global warming potential 21
times greater than that of carbon
dioxide over a 100-year timeline
(Source IPCC).

HUMAN FACTORS
• Cutting down trees for (1) …………………… fuel
• Industrial Revolution
Combustion engine
• (2) ……………………
• Increase in population  deforestation
KNOWN EFFECTS
• Over previous 130 yrs: temp has increased by 0.6 ° C
• Since Ind. Rev.: CO2 has increased by 30% & Methane has increased by (3)
145% / 145 percent (from mining, animals, rice paddies)
……………………
agriculture esp. fertiliser; waste management; car
• N2O has increased (from (4) ……………………
exhausts)
• Greenhouse Effect: gases form (5)……………………(a) barrier → heat trapped → Earth warms up

H
FUTURE EFFECTS
1. Rise in sea levels → ice melting

Sea level Number of people at risk

1998 levels 46 million

(6) ……………………

+50 cm 92 million

+1 metre 118 million

(7) ……………………

Vegetation zones
2. Change in (8) ………………… → more arid areas → population movement to cities
(certain)
3. Increase in pests and (9) …………………… e.g. malaria
disease(s)
4. Change in ecosystems:
*shift in (10) …………………… – some die, others multiply
*deserts get hotter & bigger Species
composition

Speaking

H
1. What are some things ordinary people
can do to protect the environment?
2. What are some ways in which
industries damage the environment?
3. Do you believe that international
cooperation is necessary to solve
environmental problems?

H
1. What are some things ordinary people can do to protect the
environment?
Example:
- Use environmentally friendly products instead of a conventional
one
- energy saving (use light bulbs or natural light, reduce water
heating Expenses, etc)
- Don’t buy single-use plastics
- Reuse and recycle
- Reduce your carbon footprint
- Volunteer for a wildlife or environmental organization
- Switch to hybrid or electric cars, use public transportation

H
2. What are some ways in which industries damage the
environment?

Example: Factories use fossil fuels to run machines and the smoke

and carbon monoxide released lead to air pollution, dispose of
their waste in nearby waterways, creating water pollution ->
turn affects the entire ecosystem, natural habitat
