Plastic Pollution
Plastic is omnipresent
• Visible as in manufactured goods
• Invisible littered in uninhabited beaches ending up in the oceans
destroying sea life
The Fight against plastic

The world has finally woken up to the seriousness of life-threatening

plastic pollution. Ideas galore looking for solutions like

• Recycle used plastic

• Reinvent the material itself developing biodegradable plastic made
from plants
• Activism in grassroots campaigns
THE ADIDAS X PARLEY COLLABORATION of 2015

Adidas is an German MNC that designs and manufactures shoes,

clothing and accessories
Parley for Oceans is an environmental organization founded with the
aim of protecting the oceans
Both partnered and came out with innovative ideas creating a
worldwide movement to save oceans through the power of sport
THE THREE LOOP
STRATEGY
The concept shoe is a beacon of light
LOOP 1 - RECYCLED LOOP
MADE WITH RECYCLED MATERIALS

• Parley Ocean Plastic is a catalyst innovation created from up cycled

plastic waste intercepted from beaches and coastal communities
before it reaches the oceans
• Used as a replacement for virgin plastic in the making of Adidas
x Parley products
• An eco-friendly shoe with an upper-body formed of plastic materials
from the ocean and the mid-sole 3D printed out of recycled polyester
and gill nets.
• Use of recycled plastic in products will avoid plastic waste and stop
the pollution of the world's oceans
LOOP 2 - CIRCULAR LOOP
MADE TO BE REMADE

• Adidas will continue to make products that can be remade so that

adidas wearers will be able to buy products, wear them till they’re
worn out, and then return them so they can be made into something
new.
• Thus when one bit of plastic has fulfilled its purpose, it must be
remade to fulfill another
LOOP 3 - REGENERATIVE LOOP
MADE WITH NATURE

• Products to be made with renewable resources and natural processes

• Make the products with natural materials, or create new materials
using cells and proteins that can be returned to nature.
Adidas – Other Initiatives
• Already working on the development of bio-fabricated materials for
sports apparel and presented prototypes for tennis wear
• Eliminated plastic bags from its stores in 2016 and will also use
recycled packaging to deliver products to stores in the future
• Consumers in the UK have been receiving a voucher for the online
store when they return used but still functional products and avail
discounts
Adidas sites are now largely plastic-free

• End of 2020, more than half of all the polyester used in products was
recycled polyester
• Around 40 tonnes of plastic waste are avoided each year
• Goal is to cut out virgin polyester entirely by 2024
• From 2024 onwards, will use only recycled polyester in every product
and on every application where a solution exists
• By 2030, will reduce greenhouse gas emissions from both their own
activities and those of their suppliers by 30 percent compared to the
year 2017
