CALCULUS 1
INTRODUCTION TO BASIC CALCULUS
Course Description:
This course covers algebra, trigonometry and basic
concepts of calculus such as limits, continuity and
differentiability of functions; differentiation of
algebraic and transcendental functions involving one
variable; applications of differential calculus to
problems on optimization, rate of change, related
rates, tangents and normals and approximations;
partial differentiation and transcendental curve tracing.

a. The Tangent Line and the Derivative.
b. Differentiability and Continuity.
e. Theorems on Differentiation of Algebraic
Functions and Higher-Order Derivatives.

g. Derivatives of trigonometric functions.
h. Derivatives of composite functions and the
chain rule.
i. Derivative of the Power Function for rational
exponents and Implicit Differentiation.

Behavior of Functions and their Graphs
Duration: Week 11 - 15
a. Related rates.
b. Maximum and minimum Function values.
c. Applications involving an absolute extremum on a
closed interval.
d. Increasing and decreasing functions and the first
derivative test.
Course Content:

Duration: Week 11 - 15
e. Concavity and points of inflection and the
second derivative test.
f. Summary of Sketching Graphs of Functions.
g. Additional applications of absolute extrema.
Class Minimums:
1. Must have attended at least 80% of the allotted
contact time (36 out of 45 hours).
2. Must have submitted ALL Practice Tasks with at
least 70% correct items.
3. Must have passed all term exams.
Grading System:
Grades are computed as weighted criterion and the
general weighted average (GWA) is transmuted into
Grade-point average (GPA).

As such, have four rating periods: prelim, midterm,


semi-final and final. Each rating period is weighted
25%, and is computed as follows:
