MU L TIP L Y IN G 3 DI G I T S

BY 2 D IG I T S
USING THE V E DIC M ET HOD
OBJECTIVE

•At the end of the session, the students will be able to find
the solution of multiplying 3 digits by 2 digits and be able to
relate it to algebra in general form of the expression with
the base of 10.
MOTIVATION
•MAZE ACTIVITY (Evaluating algebraic expressions by maze
challenge)

Directions:
• Start at the box under the large “start arrow”. Evaluate the expressions and show your work.
Follow your answer choice to the next box and through the maze until you reach the FINISH. You
must choose path with arrows that point AWAY from the box that you are currently on.

LESSON PROPER

• -The teacher will introduce the topic which multiplying 3 digits by 2 digits.
• -Illustrate the two methods the traditional method and the crisscross method (Vedic method).
Traditional Way!
Illustration:
*Multiply 135 by 12.
Solution:
134 Steps: 1. Multiply by the ones.
12
2. Multiply by the tens.
268 3.Add to get and find the product.
134
1608
Vedic Method!
Definition:
•Trinomial- is a three-term polynomial.
•Binomial- is a two-term polynomial.
Illustration:
Steps:

1. 2. 3. 4.
Steps:

1. 2. 3. 4.

*Multiply 135 by 12.

Solution: Steps: 2(4)= 8

134 1(4)+ 2(3) = 4+ 6= 10 (Carry 1)
12 1 (3)+ 2(1) = 3+ 2= 5+ 1= 6 (Add 1)
1608 1(1)=1
• GENERAL FROM:
134= 100 + 30 + 4 → a2 + 3a + 4 Checking:

12 = 10 + 2 → a + 2 let a= 10

• let a= 10 a3 + 5a2 +10a + 8

a2 + 3a + 4 =(10)3 + 5(10)2 +10(10) + 8

a+ 2 =1000 + 500 + 100 +8

a3 + 3a2 +4a =1608

2a2 +6a + 8
a3 + 5a2 +10a + 8
GUIDED QUESTIONS:

• IN MULTIPLYING 3 DIGITS BY 2 DIGITS NUMBERS , WHICH DO YOU PREFER TO USE THE TRADITIONAL
METHOD OR THE VEDIC METHOD?

• WHAT CAN YOU SAY ABOUT THE VEDIC METHOD?

• Assessment:
Directions: Multiply the given using the vedic method and be able to relate it to algebra in
general form of the expression with the base of 10.
