Problem 2
A real-life application
Numerical method can be applied in many ways in real life. There
is one problem we find that we are interested in and choose it to do
our project. It’s is using Simson’s rule to determine the
displacement
A real-life application
 A student living near Nguyen Thai Son overpass
bridge – Go Vap goes to HCM University of
Technology in Di An, Bình Duong by motorbike.
 He recorded the instantaneous velocity data in a table
of his motorbike every 5 minutes.
 He arrives at the university after about 30 minutes.
 He wants to know how far from his house to the
university.

 Assume that there are no traffic jam and traffic light.

A real-life application
Recorded data table below shows the instantaneous velocity of the student
from his house to the university
Because of Vietnamese Law on Road Traffic, the maximum velocity he can ride
is 40km/h
Data table:

T (min) 0 5 10 15 20 25 30

V (km/h) 38 39 40 37 35 39 40
Theory background
 Velocity is the derivative of position with respect to time:

 So, to calculate the displacement, we have to take the integral of

the velocity respect to time:

x(t) =
Theory background
 Applied the Simpson’s rule, which has the formula:

𝑏 ∆ 𝑥
𝑓 ( 𝑥 ) 𝑑𝑥 = ¿¿
∫ 3
𝑎
¿
Where
Calculation 2nd 3rd
1st 4th 5th 6th

T (min) 0 5 10 15 20 25 30

V (km/h) 38 39 40 37 35 39 40

 In this case: the interval is divided into subintervals;

 Thus: = 5 (min);
 And we convert minutes to hours: 5 minutes = hours
Calculation
T (min) 0 5 10 15 20 25 30

V (km/h) 38 39 40 37 35 39 40

The displacement of the student from his house to the university is:
1
𝑏
12
∫ 𝑓 𝑥 𝑑𝑥= 3 [38+(4 ×39)+(2× 40)+(4×37)+(2× 35)¿+(4×39)+40]
( )
𝑎

= 19.1111 km
Compare to Google maps 19.1111 km
End
Thanks for your attention
