WHAT IS FOLDABLE E-BIKE ?
 It is one of the upcoming and convenient way of transportation from one
place to another.
 A foldable e-bike is an electric-bike designed to fold into a compact form,
facilitating transport and easily park.
 When folded, the bike can be easily carried into buildings and work places
or on public transportation.
 Folding mechanisms may vary, with each offering a distinct combination
of folding speed, folding ease, compactness, ride, weight, durability and
price.
NECESSITY OF FOLDABLE E-BIKE
Why do we need electric bike ?
Problem with conventional mode of transportation -
 Pollution,
 Traffic,
 Parking,
 Cost,
 Non-renewable energy resources.
OBJECTIVES
 Designing of bike’s chassis, model.
o pencil paper based drawing
o software based modelling
 Stress analysis of bike structure.
o Joint analysis (Pin joint)
o Column analysis
o Beam analysis
 Fabrication and modification of bike.
METHODOLOGY
 Designing And Modelling Of Bike’s Model
 Designing involves calculation of bike geometry.
 Modelling start from the rough sketching to final modelling in the form of
Computer Aided Design by using CAD software like Auto-CAD or CATIA V5.
 Structural Analysis Of Bike
 Joint analysis,
 Column and Beam Analysis.
 Fabrication Of Physical Model
 This step involves material selection step, its cost consideration &
fabrication of the physical model.
 Installation Of Electro-Mechanical System
The requirement and capabilities of the bike will be studied which will guide in
deciding the capacity for driving system, its power consumption, output
torque requirement etc.
 Testing And Implementation Of Modification
Comparing the actual model parameters with assumed parameters and
implementing the required modifications.

PROBLEM DEFINITION
 Designing Factors
o Designs of most of the available foldable e-bikes are generally complex to users or to new
riders. It requires practice and time for easy folding and unfolding of these bikes.
 Limitations due to Path Roughness
o Present days, foldable e-bikes are generally restricted to plane surface (or roads). Due to
their compactness they generally fail to provide easy ride in rough terrain.
 Restriction to Compactness
o Foldable e-bike’s compact designs still occupy much space and hence hinder their carrying.
Their weight and lager space requirement restricts their carrying in easy and comfortable
manner.
 Cost
o The average cost of these bikes is around 15 to 25k rupees. Thus there is a need to re-design
the model for reducing the cost.
COST OF MATERIAL

S.No. Item Quantity Cost

1 Fork+Handle+Seat 2+1+1 Rs.680.00
2 Hollow rectangular bar 1(3.5 feet) Rs.140.00
3 Pair of wheel 1 Rs.300.00
4 DC Motor 1 Rs.5000.00
5 Controller 1 Rs.850.00
6 Throttle 1 Rs.800.00
7 Wire 3 meter Rs.50.00
8 Chain and free wheel 1 Rs.100.00
Total Rs.7920.00
RESULT
 A working model of compactable foldable e-bike, which can be
folded/unfolded easily within 5-10 seconds.
 It should weigh around 13 to 15 kg, and can be carried easily in a small
bag of 80cm*40cm*30cm dimension.
 A Single charge should provide a range of travelling around 12 to 15km.
 It can accommodate 60 to 70kg rider with considerable comfort.

(Data are assumed for the bike to be designed in accordance with:

 ‘Concept of User Friendly Modified Folding Bicycle’, Priyadarshini College of Engineering, Nagpur, India.
 ‘A Typical Approach in Conceptual and Embodiment Design of Foldable Bicycle’,
International Journal of Computer Applications (0975 – 8887) Volume 87 – No.19,
February 2014)
FUTURE SCOPE
 The bike can further be improved by using :
o Solar panels and piezo electric materials on the front and the rear frames
of the mud guards or other similar places which would be responsible for
trapping energy and converting the same into electric energy, thereby
improving the battery’s efficiency.
 The weight of the bike can be significantly reduced by using a lighter
material like carbon fiber, aircraft grade aluminum.
 Pedal operating mechanisms may also be installed.
 Use of wheel hub motor reduces transmission losses and reduce the overall
size of bike
ADVANTAGES
 Pollution free
 Eco Friendly
 Quick Fold
 Less space
 Easy to carry
 Easy to learn
 Easy to handle
 Comfortable
 Solution to traffic
 Ease in maintenance
DISADVANTAGES

 Off-Roading - Folding bikes are more compact because they

have much smaller wheels than non-folding bikes. That
means you'll feel the bumps and irregularities in the street
more acutely.
 Speed – The speed of foldable bike is less than that of
conventional electric bike, hence it is not ideal for speed
junkies.
