Mali, was a trading empire that flourished in western Africa from the 13th
to the 16th century. The empire of Mali became of the most largest empire.

The Mali Empire's rise may be traced back to Sundiata, often
known as the "Lion King" by some. After conquering the old
capital of the Ghana Empire in 1240, he established a
hereditary kingdom. The Mali Empire was ruled by the
Mansa, the Mali Empire's ruler. The Mansa had absolute
power that could not be questioned. He wielded ultimate
power over the empire, which is passed down by hereditary.
The empire was then divided into provinces, each controlled
by a ferba, or governor. Many government administrators
were Muslim scribes, and Islam played an important role in
the administration.

The Songhai Empire was the largest and last of the three major pre-colonial
empires to emerge in West Africa.

SONGHAI EMPIRE?
The Songhai Empire first came into power under the leadership
of Sunni Ali, a prince. He was imprisoned by the leader of the
Mali Empire, who ruled over the Songhai. Ali escaped to Gao
and took control of the city in 1464. He founded the Songhai
Empire from the city of Gao. Askia Muhammad was elected
Songhai leader in 1493. He took the Songhai Empire to its peak
and established the Askia Dynasty. The Songhai was divided
into five provinces, each of which had its governor. All of
Askia's governors, judges, and town heads were Muslims. The
emperor had absolute power, but he also had ministers who
oversaw various sectors of the empire. They also advised the
Emperor on critical matters.

commercial hub that flourished for over 500 years.

CARTHAGE?
The government of Carthage was based on a system of
elected officials who were accountable to a popular
assembly. It is composed of different sectors. Initially, the
Suffetes The most powerful office in the Carthaginian
government was held jointly by two magistrates elected
annually. Second, the Senate; the Suffetes would consult the
Senate on government policy in military, diplomatic, and
financial matters. Third, the Senior Officials, wherein
certain senators were selected for special commissions.
Lastly, the citizens' main powers were to vote on issues
proposed by the Senate and the House and to elect officials.
Citizenship was reserved for males from the city of
Carthage. Women, slaves, and foreigners could not enjoy
citizen status.
