Impacts of Social Media

on Society

By: Carmella Salvatori, Semiah Balazadeh and Christian S. Ruiz

Question / Brief
Summary
Since its introduction into mainstream culture, social media
has been a wildly successful way to connect people. While the
power to talk and spread ideas from virtually anywhere is a
great for modern communication, how it impacts people has
become a large topic of debate. Many question its effect – on
youths specifically – and wonder if social media is really as
good for people as it is thought to be. This presentation
strives to shed light on some of social media's impacts and
showing the positive and negative.
How social media can be bad "Cross-
lagged analysis of problematic social
media use and phubbing among college
students"
Summary:
This report describes the result of study on the effects of
problematic social media use on "phubbing" which featured
328 students from several universities. Phubbing refers to the
phenomenon where people defer physical social relationships
in favor of using networking sites. This study found that
unhealthy social media use related positively to the levels of
phubbing observed later.

What this proves:
This report is a good example of a negative effect of social
media. It found that when students used it excessively, they
would prioritize being online instead of being socially present
in-person. This shows that even though social networking sites
were designed to bring people from all over the world together,
it can lead people to isolate themselves away from those close
to them.

Conclusion

The sources show that although social media has both positive and
negative effects, the positive effects seem to outweigh the negative
aspects.
This research show that whoever is in control of that is being presented
on social media can significantly determine whether the outcome is
positive or negative. The positive effects of social media is that resources
are more available to people where the negative effects of social media
are isolation instead of greater physical social connectivity.

How does social media and how it impacts us relate to
ideas from Fahrenheit 451?
Fahrenheit 451 was a dystopic novel written in 1953 by Ray Bradbury.
This story follows a fireman who burns books in a society where
literature is outlawed, and entertainment is quick and mind-numbing.
But how does this story relate to social media? Despite its age, this
story remains relevant to modern times – and in more ways than its
inclusion of earbuds.
A few quotes in particular stand out to show the correlations between
Bradbury's dystopia and today's world with social media. The first
being "If you don't want a man unhappy politically, don't give him two
sides to a question to worry about..." (Pg. 58) bears a striking
resemblance to social media's ability to push ideas or suppress them.
The second quote, "'I'm tired of listening to this junk,' said Mildred
turning from him to the announcer again..." (Pg. 62) Shows how
Mildred pays attention to the parlor walls in favor of talking with
Montag, which shows social disconnect and phubbing.
