How does social media and how it impacts us relate to
ideas from Fahrenheit 451?
Fahrenheit 451 was a dystopic novel written in 1953 by Ray Bradbury.
This story follows a fireman who burns books in a society where
literature is outlawed, and entertainment is quick and mind-numbing.
But how does this story relate to social media? Despite its age, this
story remains relevant to modern times – and in more ways than its
inclusion of earbuds.
A few quotes in particular stand out to show the correlations between
Bradbury's dystopia and today's world with social media. The first
being "If you don't want a man unhappy politically, don't give him two
sides to a question to worry about..." (Pg. 58) bears a striking
resemblance to social media's ability to push ideas or suppress them.
The second quote, "'I'm tired of listening to this junk,' said Mildred
turning from him to the announcer again..." (Pg. 62) Shows how
Mildred pays attention to the parlor walls in favor of talking with
Montag, which shows social disconnect and phubbing.
