THREE ELEMENTS THAT
CONSTITUTE DESCRIPTION OF
CONTEMPORARY ARTS

• SUBJECT MATTER
• MATERIAL
• ART ELEMENTS &
PRINCIPLES
SUBJECT MATTER
• Is what we see that is depicted in
the artwork. It may be a human
form where the figures are
engaged in a activity, or a
combination of texture and color.
It may also be a figure made
from found objects put together
or assembled into a coherent
whole.
MATERIAL
• Is what the artwork
made of. It can also
be a combination of
objects used in the
artwork.
ART ELEMENTS
& PRINCIPLES
• Refer to the physical qualities of the
image. The artist uses colors, lines,
spaces, and other elements to make
visual images. These are arranged
into an organized manner that
observes unity, harmony, rhythm, or
other principles of design in a
creative way.

APPLICATION OF
TECHNIQUES
STEP 1
Decide on an inspiration. Determine the theme to
use in the artwork. Find any particular person,
scenery, object, idea or issue which interests you.
This will help you envision how will the artwork
look like.
STEP 2
Incorporate your message in it. Contemporary Art
is more than what meets the eye. Brainstorm with
the inspiration you had in mind to come up with
something to tell to your audience. What is the
story behind your artwork? What do you intend
to do with it?
STEP 3
The side of the medium or form to use. Will you
use paint or use canvas? How about molding or
sculpting something? Do that limit yourself with
the traditional forms of art making—performance
are can be also considered, if it will help you
convey your message clear and stronger.
STEP 4
Study and plan your artwork carefully. Try
exploring with the elements and principles of art.
Decide whether you like using geometric shapes in
dark color or bright minimalist brush strokes in
your painting, for example.
STEP 5
Ready your materials. Have all materials you need
to carry out the artwork. This will also help you
to feel ready to continue your plan.
STEP 6
Start right now. As soon as you completed the
concept, the plan and materials, start doing it.
Don't hold yourself back and don't allow yourself
to procrastinate. Live in the moment and make
difference of doing progress.
STEP 7
Don't be afraid to make mistakes and do
something new. Mistakes are inevitable. Don't just
stick to the plan. If you find yourself bored and
troubled, then experiment with what you have.
Try using different elements and principles and
put them together in one artwork.
STEP 8
Feel proud about yourself. After all is set and
done, reward yourself. You have just created
something out of nothing, up on intangible idea
which only you had thought of. Feel proud to have
expressed yourself.
SHORT QUIZ
1) Is an element in which the artwork made of. It can also be a combination
of objects used in the artwork.
2) Is an element that may be a human form where the figures are engaged in
a activity and may also be a figure made from found objects put together or
assembled into a coherent whole.
3) Refer to the physical qualities of the image.
4 & 5) Give two methods on how to critique an artwork.
With every new age of art, there are new
unique techniques that define how the
movement develops. For contemporary art,
among many techniques, you can find
techniques such as minimalism, found
objects, and large scale paintings. Each of
these bring their own unique perspective into
the artistic community, and each is valued as
a pick for a technique that is most influential
in contemporary art. Look out for these
when you’re out at an exhibition next, you’ll
find that they’re much more relevant than
you perhaps think that they are.
