AIC: Responding to an Exam Question

LO: Be able to plan an essay led by your ideas about the text.
Essay Structure:
• A thesis outlining your initial response to the question. Aim to IMPRESS!
Make points about the play and Priestley’s intention that you can develop in
your subsequent paragraphs. The key here is that you share your ideas about
the question and play.
• Analysis 1: Zoom IN: Close analysis of methods using at least one quote to
support your points and ‘fuel’ close analysis.
• Development: Zoom OUT: Now try to ‘zoom out’ to the wider issues /
themes of the play. Still quote / analysis process – but rather than the
detailed language analysis try to think about methods e.g. character and
wider themes. You might also think about another aspect of the question.
• Conclude: Return to your original point and give a personal response to the
question. E.g. what do you find effective / challenging / provoking about
Priestley’s methods and ideas?
