A transistor computer, now often
called a second-generation computer, is
a computer which uses discrete
transistors instead of vacuum tubes. The
first generation of electronic computers
used vacuum tubes, which generated
large amounts of heat, were bulky and
unreliable.
The THIRD GENERATION
of computer is marked by the use of
Integrated Circuits (IC's) in place of
transistors. A single I.C has many
transistors, resistors and capacitors along
with the associated circuitry. The I.C was
invented by Jack Kilby. This development
made computers smaller in size, reliable
and efficient.
Time Period: 1971 – 1980
Technology: VLSI
(Microprocessor)
Size: Smaller
Processing: Faster than the
older generations
FOURTH GENERATION
- these computers used the VLSI
technology or the Very Large Scale
Integrated (VLSI) circuits technology.
Therefore they were also known as
the microprocessors. Intel was the
first company to develop a
microprocessor.

Microprocessors
- consist of a small silicon chip, on which
thousands of circuit are placed.
Time Period: 1982 – Present
Technology: AI Intelligence (ULSI)
Parallel Processing Hardware
Size: Smaller
Processing: Faster than the older
generations
In the FIFTH GENERATION, VLSI
technology became ULSI (Ultra Large Scale
Integration) technology, resulting in the
production of microprocessor chips having ten
million electronic components. This generation
is based on parallel processing hardware and AI
(Artificial Intelligence) software.
