BIOENGINEERED CANCER

MODELS
FOCUS ON BREAST & LIVER CANCER
Problem
✶ Currently, efforts invested in developing new drugs often
fail to translate into meaning clinical benefits for cancer
patients.
✶ There is an urgent medical need to develop more effective
anticancer therapies and accurately predicting the clinical
value
✶ Solid cancers have complex and heterogeneous structures
composed of different cell types and ECM.

3D cancer models have great potential to advance our

understanding of cancer biology.
Current Process
✶ 2D cell culture and Animal models are most commonly used
to study any cancer in basic research and preclinical trials
✶ However, Planar cell culture is difficult to regulate
morphology, behavior, activity and function of cells
✶ Lacks cell-cell, cell-matrix, cell-tissue interactions
✶ Animal models face many uncertain factors due to their
unique physical complexity and species differences
Types of cancer models
✶ Constructs
✶ Organoids
✶ On-a-chip
Applications
✶ Discover therapeutic targets
✶ Develop new drugs
✶ Personalize anticancer treatments in an accurate,
reproducible, clinically transferable and robust manner.
Model Advantages Disadvantages

chip tissue fabrication
interface 2.
2. Includes
vascular flow
Advantages
✶ Precisely reproduce the in vivo environment of specific
tumor, including its perfusion vessels
✶ 3D bioprinted cancer models could show immunoglobin
production, expression of proinflammatory molecules,
activation of cytokines or chemokines.
✶ Up-regulation of cell-cell adhesion pathways
✶ Reduction of proteins associated with cell division and DNA
replication.
Commercially available cancer models
✶ Corning
✶ Greiner Bio-one
✶ STEM-CELL technologies
✶ AMS Biotechnology
