HABITAT
This endemic species lives in Lake Titicaca,
located on the border between Peru and
Bolivia, at a height of 3,812 m and with a
maximum depth of 281 m. The temperature
is constant at 10°C in deep water, while
surface water fluctuates between 2-4°C
annually.

CHARACTERISTICS
The giant frogs of Lake Titicaca are easily recognizable due to
the permanent, loose, fibrous, glandular folds of skin that
hang down the sides, back, and hind legs. These folds give the
frog a "baggy" appearance.
Body coloration is highly variable between individuals, but
these frogs are always a combination of olive green, dark
green or even black dorsally and white or pearl ventrally.
body consists of a large, flattened head with a rounded snout
and a highly vascular buccal cavity, a relatively narrow caudal
end, and richly vascularized skin. Lake Titicaca giant frogs
have a long hind leg with webbed digits only on the hind legs.
The Telmatobius culeus is the largest exclusively aquatic frog
in the world. They are large in size, as their bodies alone can
measure up to 14.5 cm. However, the French explorer
Jacques-Yves Cousteau described coming across a specimen
measuring 50 cm in length in the 1970s.

Why is it in danger of extinction?
• The giant frog of Lake Titicaca is in
danger of extinction as a result of PO LL U T I O N O F T H E
pollution from mining and also because RI V E R A N D LA K E HUNTING
of the use of the amphibian in traditional
medicine.

• This amphibian is threatened by hunting

as it is consumed in restaurants in
Bolivia where it is presented as a
popular tourist dish. In addition, the
increasing pollution of the river and lake
in which they live is also an important
factor that not only affects frogs but
many other species.

S O ME O F T H E P O SS I B LE M EA S U RE S
LAKE TITICACA
A RE :
?

• 1) Develop regulations that prohibit the sale of this species alive or dead.

• 2) Generate strategies to minimize the impact of human activities on the

Lake (organic pollution, garbage, sewage, pesticides, hunting)

• 3) Develop awareness programs on the importance of this species, at the

local level.

• 4) Increase knowledge about biology and ecology.

• 5) Initiate a medium and long-term monitoring program of the populations

in both sectors of Lake Titicaca.

• 6) Breeding of specimens in captivity for repopulation purposes
