RECAP
In the previous lesson, you were enlightened on facts and
claims. There are three types of namely: claim of fact,
claim of policy, and claim of value. As we know, claim of
fact weighs heavy with supporting details. On the other
hand, claim of value and claim of policy claims to govern
man, and show the practices and habits formed as part of
living in a civilization. Each claim would need to be
supported by facts, evidence, or an expert's findings.
Unlike claims, facts need no support.

Being a critical reader also involves understanding that texts are always developed in a
certain context. A text is neither written nor read in a vacuum; its meaning and interpretation
are affected by a given set of circumstances. Thus, context is defined as the social, cultural,
political, historical, and other related circumstances that surround the text and form the terms
from which it can be better understood and evaluated. Knowledge of the text’s context helps
in appreciating the text’s message more deeply. In discovering a reading context, you may
ask questions like:

• When was the work written?

• What were the circumstances that produced it?
• What issues does it deal with?

READING AND WRITING | S.Y. 2021 - 2022

CONTEXT IN WHICH A TEXT IS
DEVELOPED

 It is important for a writer to look into the writing process first before
beginning. We give emphasis to this because it is through the writing
process tat the text will materialize.

 The doer of the writing process is the writer or the author who will conceive
the text. Variety in text takes place because of loads of information gathered by
the writer. Take for example the beauty of Samoa. One author accumulated
notes and figures and took photos of Samoa, then he began the process of
writing about it. It resulted into one poem and one story. The text is now
enjoyed by people who are interested in prose and poetry.

READING AND WRITING | S.Y. 2021 - 2022

HYPOTEXT AND HYPERTEXT

There are various forms of writing one can engage to. As a

craft, it needs to be practiced and formed until it evolves into
something beautiful such as an English poem, a Filipino short
story, a Visayan epic, or anything that the writer feels
comfortable in writing

READING AND WRITING | S.Y. 2021 - 2022

HYPOTEXT

Hypotext is an early literary work which becomes a basis or

source for a later work.

Take for example Jose Rizal’s Noli Me Tangere, as a hypotext.

When El Filibusterismo was published, Noli Me Tangere becomes
the hypotext as El Filibusterismo is a continuation of the former.

When a text is read for the first time but a reader has come across
a text that is similar to the one being read for the first time. It is not
a duplicated work, but upon reading it, there might be some lines
or stanzas that give away certain relation to a different work.

READING AND WRITING | S.Y. 2021 - 2022

HYPERTEXT

Hypertext, on the other hand, is a reading material that

succeeds an earlier written predecessor. At times, an
author produces a work that moves other authors to write
another piece work as response.

Sometimes, a particular reading material becomes a

starring point of an idea that blossoms into a different
idea. Hypertexts may take a variety of forms including
imitation, parody, and pastiche.

READING AND WRITING | S.Y. 2021 - 2022

INTERTEXTUALITY

Another important technique in analyzing the context of a text’s development is

defining its intertextual link to another text.

Intertextuality is the modeling of a text’s meaning by another text.

It is defined as the connections between language, images, characters, themes, or
subjects depending on their similarities in language, genre, or discourse.

This is seen when an author borrows and transforms a prior text, or when you read
one text and you reference another. This view recognizes that the text is always
influenced by previous texts and in turn anticipates future texts.

READING AND WRITING | S.Y. 2021 - 2022

FORMS OF INTERTEXT

Parody
Imitation
Pastiche

Continuation
Parody

Parody - It makes light of a situation. This should not just be a

simple imitation, but should be another work transformed.

READING AND WRITING | S.Y. 2021 - 2022

Imitation

Imitation - Filipinos are very good

imitators. Imitation shows another work in
the same likeness. Do you notice that
when a new or good read becomes popular
in the bookstand, the imitations of these
titles are released right away? The
imitations are so obvious because even
though the spelling is slightly different, the
similarity is very strong. (REMAKE)

READING AND WRITING | S.Y. 2021 - 2022

Pastiche

Pastiche. This is almost the same as parody, but instead of making fun of an
original work, it pays respect to the original. It shows an eclectic style, but it
differs from allusion.

READING AND WRITING | S.Y. 2021 - 2022

Continuation

Continuation. A work that is a sequel of another work. If there is a source, it can be

made into a sequel of something. This is usually done on films.

READING AND WRITING | S.Y. 2021 - 2022

INTERTEXT AND INTRATEXT

 A context that surrounds a text before it is even made is called intertextuality. There
are relations that are suggested which the reader has the option to look further into.
It is like layers of context piled up on top of the of the others as the text is being
used, written, or read. Some intertextuality is just a single reference but others have
multiple references.

 There is also what is known as intratextuality, which indicates the reference within
the work. For example, a book in mathematics which discusses the rational
algebraic expressions will become the reference on an earlier explanation of
exponents and operations on fractions.

READING AND WRITING | S.Y. 2021 - 2022

INTERTEXT AND INTRATEXT

 The kinds of relationship that exist between text can be classified into three types,
obligatory, optional, and accidental

You are obliged to read other work before you can fully comprehend the current
OBLIGATORY READING
work. You Link a text to another

OPTIONAL READING The text might have a slight connection to another thing

ACCIDENTAL READING You might see a connection from a deed or act from previous experience.
