WHAT IS NUCLEIC

ACID?
-A nucleic acid is a chain of nucleotides which stores genetic information
in biological systems. It creates DNA and RNA, which store the information
needed by cells to create proteins. This information is stored in multiple
sets of three nucleotides, known as codons.

FUNCTION:
store and transmit genetic information

Examples: stucture:
deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) monomers - nucleotides
ribonucleic acid (RNA) polymers - polynucleotides(DNA,RNA)
NUCLEOTIDES
Three parts
- nitrogen base (C-N ring)
-pentose sugar (5C)
*ribose in RNA
*deoxyribose in DNA
-phosphate (PO)group
There are two kinds of nucleic acids in the cell:

1.deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA)

2. ribonucleic acid (RNA)

DEOXYRIBONUCLEIC ACID (DNA)

-DNA is the genetic material found in all living

organisms, ranging from single-celled bacteria to
multicellular mammals
It is found in the nucleus of eukaryotes and in the
organelles , chroloplasts , and mitochondria. In
prokaryotes , DNA is not enclosed in a
membranous envelope.The entire genetic content
of a cell is known as its genome, and the study of
genomes is genomics.
RIBONUCLEIC ACIDS (RNA)

RNA is mostly involved in protein synthesis. The DNA

molecules never leaves the nucleus but instead use an
interme-diary to communicate with the rest of the cell.
