BASIC PRINCIPLES OF
GRAPHICS
AND LAYOUT
Types of Lines

• Vertical Lines - lines that move up

and down without any slant.

• Horizontal lines - lines that are

parallel to the horizon.

• Diagonal lines - lines that slant.

• Zigzag lines - lines made from
a combination of diagonal
lines.

• Curved lines - Lines that

change direction gradually

Line Variation

Line Variation - adding interest to your

lines is important in creating successful
artwork.

• Length - lines can be long or short.

• Width - lines can be wide or skinny

• Texture - lines can be rough or
smooth.

• Direction - lines can move in any

direction.
• Degree of curve - lines can curve
gradually or not at all.

• Line quality or line weight - refers to the
thickness or thinness of a line. By varying the
line quality artists can make objects appear
more 3-Dimensional and more interesting.

• Hatching and crosshatching - using lines to

create value.
 Hatching - lines going in the same
direction.
 Crosshatching - lines that cross.

Munson's operationalized attributes

• Hue - the color itself, the

distinctive quality by which
one can distinguish one color
from another, e.g., red, blue,
green, blue.

Value - the brightness of the hue, the
quality by which one distinguishes a light
color from a dark one, in the range from
white to black.

Chroma or intensity - the quality that

distinguishes a strong color from a weak
one, the departure of a color sensation from
that of white or gray, the intensity of a color
hue.

Basic Principles in Layout

LAYOUT – It is the process of planning and

arranging graphics or text in a page or
book.

A good layout should have a balanced

make up and alignment of elements.

• Symmetrical – there should be
equal weights or elements on both
sides of the page.

• Asymmetrical – It may be asymmetrical
when there is an artistic and different
intensity on the one side of the page.

• Text – The text type should be:
 Legible
 Appropriate font face
 Left justified, right justified, or
centered
 The flow of text should be easy to
read.

• Image – The image should
be:
 Proportionate
 Sharp in Color
 With High resolution
 With appropriate captions

• Proximity and Harmony – The
elements should be close together and
scattered and arranged apart from each
other. Elements should not be cluttered
and not compete with each other.

• Consistency – There
should be uniformity of
theme each page.

• Color and Shape – Use color to
create interest by providing variety
in the design (color contrast and
shapes)

• Emphasis – There should be one point
of interest in a page. The elements to
be emphasized should have a different
size, color, shape or background.
