Everything Changes

Lesson 1
Big Question: Why is nature always changing?
Share what you know

Hotspot:
Look at the pictures on page 2-3. Talk about what you Teacher reads:
see. Some trees lose their
leaves each winter and
grow new leaves each
spring. In autumn,
these leaves will change
colors. They go from
their summer green to
autumnal yellow, red

orange colors become visible. Students answer the question: What do you
think you will learn? Why?
Discussion:
Nature is all the parts of the world not made by humans. When you
think of nature, what do you think of?

• How do things in nature

change?
Let’s look at an example of a natural cycle that happens
every 24 hours.
• Why do you think they are
always changing?

• What other cycles in nature

do you know?

• How do the leaves of some

trees change when the
seasons change?
Talk about the seasons. What do you like
about the seasons.

Here is where the

designer could make
each season a different
hotspot so they can be
looked at more closely
individually.
Concept Map Practice Book 5.1 Add to your
practice book more information

As we go through this unit, it will be helpful to

organize your thinking in a concept map. Here
is an example we can use to fill in while we
study this unit.

Explanation: The big question is stated in the

center flower. We’ll add our answers to the
centers of the other flowers and give examples
on the papers hanging from those flowers.
Language Focus

Words to know: Hotspot

Read the title and listen to the poem:

Find the sentences with the words to know and
practice reading.

I think day is better than night.

Why do you think so?

Because it is bright.

I guess I like both night and day.

Look at the following pictures:
Practice using your new words to discuss your favorite time of day.

So, I think each of these pictures should come up to the

screen as a hotspot or something similar so the students
can discuss each picture individually.
Science Vocabulary: Read through the
diagram to explain the cycle of day and night
• Here I would have each word pop up on the screen so
the students can learn each word and focus on what it
means.
• Moon, stars, begins, shadows, earth, day, ends, night

• The students need to read the word and make a

sentence using the word correctly. Teacher can give
the example:
• I begin my morning by eating a healthy breakfast.
Talk Together:
What do you see during the day? How is it different from what you
see at night?

Example sentence: I see the sun during the day, but I do not see the
sun at night. I see clouds during both day and night.

Students can add these concepts to their concept map.

You could add this activity to the lesson so the students can
practice what they see during the day, night and both. It would
need to be a moving activity.
Homework:

• Write about the word STARS.

• When do you see stars? What do they make you think about?
• Draw a picture of some stars.
