NANO

WORLD
INTRODUCTION
The fields of nanoscience and nanotechnology are known for their contributions to the economy of all
countries and almost every human life. They have the capability to foster new developments in science,
technology, and innovation through the dissemination of new knowledge and applications.

Nanoscience and nanotechnology are the study and application of extremely small things and can be
used across all the other science fields, such as chemistry, biology, physics, materials science, and
engineering.

Nanotechnology is aiding and revolutionizing many different aspects of science and industry, including
energy, environmental science, homeland security, transportation, food safety, information technology,
and medicine.
Nanoscience is the study of structures and materials on an ultra-small scale. Nanoscience combines science,
engineering, and technology to study matter and processes at the nanoscale level. The nanoscale is based on
the nanometer, a unit of length equivalent to one billionth (10-9) of a meter.

A macroscale can be a million times bigger than a microscale. A microscale is a thousand times bigger than
a nanoscale. The discovery of nano particles has made an already big universe even bigger. Distances are
now measured in lengths from light years to nanometers.

For example, a single sheet of paper is approximately 100,000 nm thick and a strand of DNA is 2.5 nm
across.
Microscopy methods generate images of individual nanoparticles to characterize
their shape, size, and location. Microscopes are very essential instruments to
inspect nanotechnology products. Electron microscopy and scanning probe
microscopy are the dominant methods. Because nanoparticles have a size below
the diffraction limit of visible light, conventional optical microscopy is not useful.

By studying and controlling matter at this nanoscale (1-100 nm), scientists can
alter individual atoms and molecules. These alterations can lead to changes in the
physical, chemical, biological, and optical properties of matter. When compared to
their larger counterparts, nanoparticles can exhibit more or less strength,
flexibility, reactivity, reflectivity, and conductivity.
WHAT IS NANOTECHNOLOGY?
Nanotechnology is a field of research and innovation concerned with building 'things' -
generally, materials and devices - on the scale of atoms and molecules.

It refers to the branch of science and engineering devoted to designing, producing, and
using structures, devices, and systems by manipulating atoms and molecules at
nanoscale.

The industrial sectors most readily embracing nanotechnology are the information and
communications sector, including electronic and optoelectronic fields, food
technology, energy technology and the medical products sector, including many
different facets of pharmaceuticals and drug delivery systems, diagnostics and medical
technology, where the terms nanomedicine and bio nanotechnology are already
commonplace.
NANOPARTICLE NANOTUBES

WHAT CAN NANO TECHNOLOGY DO?

Nanotechnology is hailed as having the potential to increase the efficiency of energy consumption,
help clean the environment, and solve major health problems. It is said to be able to massively
increase manufacturing production at significantly reduced costs.
ADVANTAGES OF NANOTECHNOLOGY
 Manufacturing Advances of Nanomaterials
- Nanotechnology is already making new materials available that could revolutionize many areas of
manufacturing.

 Energy and Electronic Advantages

- Nanotechnology may transform how we obtain and use energy. In particular, nanotechnology will
likely make solar power more economical by reducing the cost of constructing solar panels and
related equipment. Energy storage devices will become more efficient as a result. Nanotechnology
will also open up new methods of generating and storing energy.

 Medical Benefits of Nanotechnology

- Nanotechnology is evolving rapidly in industrial applications, medical imaging, disease diagnosis,
drug delivery, cancer treatment, and gene therapy, and also to aid visual imaging.
 Environmental Sustainability
- Rising prices for raw materials and energy, coupled with the increasing environmental awareness of
consumers, are responsible for a flood of products on the market that promises certain advantages for
environmental and climate protection. Nanomaterials exhibit special physical and chemical
properties that make them interesting for novel, environmentally friendly products.

 Possibilities in Big Data

- big data from traffic sensors help manage congestion and avoid accidents and prevent crimes by
using statistics to more effectively allocate police resources, to name a few.

 Future Transportation Benefits

- Nanotechnology offers the promise of developing multifunctional materials that will contribute to
building and maintaining lighter, safer, smarter, and more efficient vehicles, aircraft, spacecraft, and
ships.
DISADVANTAGES OF NANOTECHNOLOGY
 Economic Disruption
- There are certain negative impacts of nanotechnology on economic disruption in many ways,
such as increased toxicological pollution on the environment due to the uncertain shape, size,
and chemical compositions of some of the created by nanotechnology products (or
nanomaterials).

 Potential Risks
- include environmental, health, and safety issues, transitional effects such as displacement of
traditional industries as the products of nanotechnology become dominant, which are of concern
to privacy rights advocates.

 Loss of Jobs
- Will cause major changes in many economic areas (e.g. loss of manufacturing and agricultural
jobs).
 Possible Threats to Security, Privacy, Health and the Environment
- Nanotechnology raises the possibility of microscopic recording devices, which would be virtually
undetectable. More seriously, it is possible that nanotechnology could be weaponized. Atomic
weapons would be easier to create and novel weapons might also be developed. One of the more
salient concerns about nanotechnology is the fear that it will harm privacy by collecting personal
information and distributing it.

- Concerning with the health and environment, nanoparticles can get into the body through the
skin, lungs and digestive system. This may help create ‘free radicals’ which can cause cell
damage and damage to the DNA. There is also concern that once nanoparticles are in the blood
stream they will be able to cross the blood-brain barrier there are also worries over the potential
for damage to other organs.
1. IS THE DEVELOPMENT OF YOUR GIVEN TECHNOLOGY A MOVEMENT
TOWARDS A GOOD LIFE?
- Nanotechnology offers the potential for new and faster kinds of computers which consume less
power and materials that produce advancements in medical treatment that people get an access
to much faster, accurate and functional medical diagnosis equipment, information technology,
homeland security, medicine, transportation that improve vehicle fuel efficiency, energy, food
safety, and environmental science, among many others. Its development is already helping to
improve health, higher the use of natural resources, and reduce environmental pollution. These
are just a few points on how nanotechnology impacts our lives. And so the development of
nanotechnology is moving towards a good life, it transforms people's lives for the better.
2. IS IT FOUNDED ON VIRTUE AND ETHICS?
- The law of “unintended consequences” should be considered across the interests to
nanotechnology and nanoscience. Most scientists are aware of their responsibilities and
are very interested in exchanging and sharing with society regarding all ethical issues.
With such awesome potential dangers inherent in nanotechnology, it must seriously
examine its potential consequences and which would have great potential for both good
and bad. Thereby the virtue and ethics of developing nanotechnology and creating policies
that will aid in its development so as to eliminate or at least minimize its damaging effects
on society, we should go through the exercise of formulating solutions to potential ethical
issues before the technology is irreversibly adopted by society.
3. IS HAPPINESS ITS END GOAL?
- Nanotechnology is known to have the potential to increase the efficiency of energy consumption,
to help clean and conserve the environment, and to solve major health problems. It is said to be
able to massively increase manufacturing production at significantly reduced costs. Products that
are produced through nanotechnology is said to be much more cheaper, lighter, yet more
functional than any other products in the market.

- Nanotechnology has improved so many things in so many different aspects and was truly a great
opportunity for us towards a quality life. Quality of life is conceived as a broad concept that
covers three meanings: first, is the quality of living environment, second, is the quality of our
performance, and lastly, is the subjective enjoyment of life. Nanotechnology can be a great help
for us in achieving the quality of life and happiness that we desire.
