MS WINDOWS 7
ENVIRONMENT AND
INSTALLATION
Intended Learning Outcomes (ILOS)
At the end of this Chapter, the student is expected to:
describe the Windows 7 OS environment;
Introducing and Installing Windows 7 OS;
Explain step by step the installation of Windows 7 environment;
Manipulate windows and manage the desktop;
Know the Objects on the Desktop;
Know how to create and edit icons for your own use;
Describe the Start Menu Basic;
Explain step by step how to create a bootable USB Flash drive; and
Be familiar with this topic because in this chapter explain how to install windows
Operating System
MS Windows 7 Installation Procedures:
In order to install your copy of the Windows 7
Operating System please make sure to have the
following items:

*Windows7Installationdisk/ Bootable USB Drive pen


*DriversCD:*Useafterinstallationprocessifneeded

Note: Backup important data before proceeding with this installation


STEP 1 : Insert the Windows 7 operating system disk
into your DVD drive, and then restart your computer

STEP 2 : You will see a prompt that says


‘Pressanykeytocontinue’ after the logo disappears.
When you see this press any key immediately.
STEP 3 : The following screenshots may be differ from what you
see during your installation. (i.e.Win7 version, HDD diskspace etc.
STEP 4 : Language options, by default English will be set along
with “time and currency format” and “keyboard or input
method”
STEP 5 : Click “Install Now”
STEP 6 : End User License Agreement
(E.U.L.A.), check the box to accept and click “Next”
STEP 7 : “Which type of installation?” window will appear.
Upgrade will be grayed out; the only option you should be able to
choose is Custom (advanced).
STEP 8 : “Where do you want to install
windows? “Make sure the partition is highlighted.
STEP 9 : Delete the partition by clicking on Drive options
(advanced) on the bottom right corner of the field. Make sure the
partition is highlighted and click on Delete. If drive advanced
options is greyed out, then the partition will not have to be deleted.

STEP 10 : Disk 0 Unallocated Space should be the only listing at


this point. If it is press next, if not please proceed to delete any
additional partitions that may be listed.
STEP 11 : The next screen will show “Installing Windows”. This
process should take approximately 10 minutes after which the
system will reboot.
STEP 12 : The next screen will show “Installing
Windows” again to complete the installation process.

NOTE: Do not press any keys during this boot up


process so as to not disturb the installation.
STEP 13 : “Setup is starting Windows” will appear on the screen,
then you will be asked to create a username and a computer name.
STEP 14 : The next step will prompt you to
create a password for your account (optional)
STEP 15 : The next screen will come up and ask you to choose one of
three options; “Use recommended settings”, “Install important updates
only” and “Ask me later”.
STEP 16 : This screen will allow you to choose your
local timezone and also adjust the date and time.
STEP 17 : Click on the appropriate location of your computer to
enable Windows 7 to apply the correct network settings.
FINALLY! The installation is done! It is the work area
where dialog boxes, windows, icons, and menus appear.

Window on a computer screen in which
small pictures (called icons).
You'll most likely see icons for:
a. Computer
b. Documents
c. Recycle bin
d. Internet Explorer

Allows you to see what drives

• External Drives
DOCUMENTS
- Supply a "catch all" place for your
personal files.

RECYCLE BIN
- Stores any files you delete until you
empty it.

Contains Windows' built in browser
that integrates
other Windows components.
CREATE AND EDIT YOUR YOUR
•ICONS:
Creating icons – to create icon, right
anywhere on the desktop and choose New
shortcut. Browse for the file or program you
want to create the icon for, click Next, name
your icon, the click Finish.
Deleting Icons - to delete right click

icon, either right click on the


icon and select Delete or
click once on the icon and
press the Delete key on your
keyboard.

Renaming Icons – to rename


an icon, right click on the
icon and choose Rename.
You can then type in the new
name.
• Arranging Icons – to arrange the icons
on your desktop, right click in a open
area of the desktop, click Sort By
a.) appropriate
Name – sort theoptions:
icons
alphabetically
from top to bottom, right to left
b.) Size – sort icons by file size.
c.) Type – sort icons by the type of
file that it is,
such as Word, Documents,
programs, etc.
d.) Date Modified – arrange icons
with the most
recent items in the top left corner.
e.) Moving & Dragging – to move (drag) an
icon, click on it once, holding down the click,
and drag it to another location. You can also
arrange the items wherever you would like.
Simply right click in the open are of the
Desktop, click View, and choose Align to Grid.
f.) Display – allows you to set your screen
resolution and other advance monitor and video
settings that covers your screen and appears
when your computer is idle for a set of period.
g.) Sounds – change which
sounds are heard when you
do everything form
receiving e-mail to
emptying your recycle bin
Taskbar & Toolbars
• Notification Area –
displays any programs you
have running in the
background and displays
the time and date.
• Taskbar – show any
programs or files you
currently have open. You
can click toolbar buttons
to go back and forth
between open items.
START MENU
BASICS
START MENU BASICS

The Start Menu is, appropriately enough, your


starting point in Windows 7. all of your
programs, settings, etc. can be accessed here.
You can use it by clicking the windows icon
button on the bottom left corner of your screen
or use the windows key on your keyboard.
ACCOUNT NAME

The account name for our test computer is


guest. The user will find access to all of
their personal files and information stored
in a single location.
COMPUTER

Formerly known as “My computer” or


“This Pc” (on windows 10) this start menu
item provides access to all storage drives
like hard drives, flash drives, network
drives, CD’s, etc.
DOCUMENTS

Many users will remember this item as “My


Documents”. From start menu item, users can
access all of their files stored in the location.
PICTURE

From here, users can find all of their pictures stored in this location.
MUSI
C

Users will find their music files stored in this location.


ALL PROGRAMS MENU

Stores most of your options, such as the


programs you have installed on your
computer including Microsoft Office.
SEARCH PROGRAMS AND FILES

Allows you to quickly search for files, folder


and programs on your entire system.
RECENTLY USED PROGRAMS

Provides quick access to programs that you use


frequently by placing them just above the start
button.
HELP AND SUPPORT

Takes you to windows 7 help center.


DEVICES AND PRINTERS

Allows you to view printers and devices


currently installed on your system.
CONTROL PANEL

Allows you to access to programs that do


everything from removing your programs to
adjusting your mouse settings and setting up a
firewall.
SHUT DOWN

Powers down the system. You can access more


power options by clicking the arrow to the
right.
RUN COMMAND

The run command gives you quick access to programs,


websites, etc. Just type in the name of the file or website
and click ok.
You can access the run command by typing “run” (without
quotations) into the Search programs and files box.
The search field can be used as the old run dialog box.
Free
Software
Free Software
Windows includes a wide array
of simple programs that makes
it easier to finish your day to
day tasks.
Below you’ll find information on these. To
access them, click on Start > Accessories >
and then the appropriate icon.
Calculator- Contains
both a simple and
scientific calculator.
Command Prompt-
Gives you access to the
old DOS style
command windows.
Notepad- This is a
simple text editor,
mainly used to type a
few notes.
Paint- A simple image
editing and program.

WordPad- A word
processing program with
more options than
Notepad, but not as
advanced as Microsoft
Windows Sidebar- Windows also includes
some other programs that make your life
easier. These programs include Internet
Explorer, Widows Contacts, Windows DVD
Maker and Windows Defender. To access
go to Start> All programs.

Internet Explorer- Provides you with a


way to view websites on the Internet.
This is a full featured program and has
many advanced options and security to
make your web browsing safe and fun.
Creating
bootable USB
Flash Drive
To create a bootable USB
drive from a downloaded
ISO file, we use a free
software called RUFUS and
we need an empty USB flash
drive with minimum size of
2GB to properly to transfer
your ISO image file on it.
1. Download the latest
RUFUS program file
from here
http://rufus.akeo.ei/
2. Run Rufus on your
Windows PC.
You should get the following
screen showing the main menu.
Choose in “device your drive that
contains your empty (Formatted
on not) USB flash drive.
You can leave other setting by
default or shown above in the
screenshot. Make sure that check
box “Create a bootable disc” is
selected.
3. Select ISO image file
to be transferred by on
your USB Flash Drive “
as shown below in the
red rectangle”. Make
sure to leave all other
option as shown in the
screenshot above.
4. Then that’s it you
can press that
“Start button” to
begin the transfer.
Your ISO to be
transfer to your
USB drive.
5. At the end of the
installation, your
USB flash drive is
ready to use.
