Pipe upsets

Describe pipe upsets

•There are three types of pipe upsets, internal, external Pipe upsetting is a process that is applied to the
ends of the tubing to allow the pipe to be threaded. The pipe upsetting process is accomplished by
heating the ends of the tubing in the upset furnace after which, the heated tube end is put into the up
setter. it provides for a thicker, stronger weld area. It also provides a better transition from the stiffer
tool joints to the more flexible tubes
THREE TYPES OF PIPE UPSET

•  Internal upset: An internal upset (IU) will have an internal diameter that is significantly smaller than
the tube. Internal upset tubes do have a minor external upset. While the upset on the OD of the tube is
minor, it can still affect which elevator bushings are compatible. Upset is frequently used to maximize
elevator capacity.

Internal-external upset :An internal-external upset (IEU) has a

larger outer diameter and a smaller inner diameter than the rest
of the tube. With the upset in both directions, this option
provides the best solution for balancing strength at the weld
area and hydraulic performance. IEU upsets are mostly used in
drilling applications.

External upset: An external upset (EU) has a much larger outer

diameter than the tube and is larger than the IU and IEU of the
same tube size. Externally upset tubes have a minor internal
disturbance. This increase in outer diameter provides the
necessary strength at the weld area, as well as a larger ID, which
improves fluid-flow characteristics through the ID, resulting in a
lower pressure drop when compared to IU pipe.
