What Is Climate
Change?
Climate change is a change in
the average temperature and
cycles of weather over a long
period of time.
• Jakarta, Indonesia
Air pollution is the biggest cause of concern in Indonesia's
capital, which is also suffering from seismic activity and
flooding.
• Delhi, India
13 of the 20 highest-risk cities are in India: Kanpur, Agra,
and Chennai even rank in the top ten. In addition, water
pollution is also a danger, causing around 400,000 deaths
every year.
3. Lima, Peru
Lima is considered to be the most
endangered city in the Americas. Like
the cities in India, Lima has air
pollution issues.
4. Lagos, Nigeria
Lagos is the most populated city in
Africa, and it may soon be unliveable.
5. Karachi, Pakistan
The number of people who live in
Karachi is approximately 16 million.
And they have all experienced the
deadly effects of extreme heat. 2015
was the year when more than 1200
people died in the city due to
temperatures that reached over 49
degrees Celsius.
Consequences of
climate change
Changes in:
•Glaciers and ice sheets
•Sea level change
•Heavy rainfall across the globe
•Extreme Drought
•Decline in Crop productivity
•Changes in ecosystems
•Hurricanes
•Rise in temperature
Climate change can be caused gradually by
natural processes or suddenly by large
events, such as a massive meteorite strike
or volcanic activity. However, the rapid
climate change we are experiencing now is
due to three major human activities:
Burning fossil fuels for heating and
cooking, generating electricity and
powering vehicles releases carbon dioxide
into the atmosphere.
Deforestation (destruction of forests)
releases carbon dioxide and reduces the
number of trees able to capture carbon
dioxide from the atmosphere.
Reduction of biodiversity creates an
unstable ecosystem. The loss of nature
leads to the fact that ecosystems are less
able to capture carbon from the
atmosphere and are less resistant to
temperature rise.
Who Causes Climate Change?
The 50 least developed countries are thought to have contributed 1% of the greenhouse gases
that have caused global warming. The USA, the EU and China alone have contributed around 60%.
Governments can make laws and policies that
reduce the amount
of greenhouse gas emissions.
Fix It? We can all make choices in our own lives that
reduce our carbon footprint (the impact our
actions and purchases have on climate change).
