INDIVIDUAL
DIFFERENCES
THE CONCEPT OF INDIVIDUAL DIFFERENCES

Individual differences are the facts that

make people different from each other.
We all know that we are different from
each other.. in many ways such as : our
physical aspects, our likes, dislikes,
interests, values, psychological makeup
and the list goes on. In other words... the
whole "Personality".
No two people or animals can be THE
SAME, they can only be similar. If there
would be no individual differences there
would be no quarrels and moreover..
there would be no Love too !!
THERE ARE VARIOUS FACTORS USED TO IDENTIFY
INDIVIDUAL DIFFERENCES
FEW OF THEM INCLUDE :

• BIOGRAPHICAL CHARACTERISTICS:
- AGE
- GENDER
ABILITY:
- INTELLECTUAL ABILITIES:
- PHYSICAL ABILITIES
AGE:
• Relation between age and job performance
• Effect of age on:
- Turnover
- Absenteeism
- Productivity
- Satisfaction
GENDER
Men v/s Women
• Job Performance
• Psychological Studies
-Women are more willing to conform to authority.
-Men are more aggressive to have expectations of success.

• Assumption
-No significant difference in job
productivity between men and women.

• Preference of Work Schedules

• Absence and Turnover Rates

ABILITY
An Ability is an individual’s capacity to perform the various task
in a job. Contrary to what we were taught in school, we weren’t all
created equal. Everyone has strengths & weaknesses in terms of
ability that make him or her relatively superior or inferior to others in
performing certain tasks or activities.
An individual’s overall abilities are essentially made up of two sets of
factors:
• Intellectual Abilities.
• Physical Abilities.
PHYSICAL ABILITIES
The capacity to do tasks demanding stamina, dexterity(energy),
strength, & similar characteristics comes under Physical Abilities.
• Nine basic Physical Abilities:
• Dynamic Strength.
• Trunk Strength.
• Static(constant) Strength.
• Explosive Strength.
• Extent Flexibility.
• Dynamic Flexibility.
• Body Coordination.
• Balance.
• Stamina.
No. Types of Physical Example
Abilities
01. Dynamic Strength The strength of a rickshaw puller is a nice example of dynamic
strength. They use muscular force repeatedly and continuously
for pulling the rickshaw.

02. Trunk Strength Trunk strength is used for lifting heavy load (i.e. a sack of 1000
kg rice).

03. Static Strength Static strength is to exert force on an object that we cannot
move, the muscles stay the same length and it is useful for
things like arm wrestling.

04. Explosive Strength People may use his explosive strength while breaking any door
of a house, if required.

05. Extent Flexibility People use extent flexibility while lifting any object from ground
to a higher place, which is above of his head.

06. Dynamic Flexibility People use dynamic flexibility while cycling.

07. Body Coordination Swimming is a good example of Body Coordination.

08. Balance We can also see balancing ability while cycling.

09. Stamina For a long duration and hard working game (i.e. football,
marathon, long distance swimming, etc.) stamina is absolutely
necessary.
INTELLECTUAL ABILITIES

The capacity to do mental activities such as Thinking, reasoning, &

problem solving comes under Intellectual Abilities.

• Dimensions of Intellectual Ability:

-Number Aptitude.
-Verbal Comprehension.
-Perceptual Speed.
-Memory.
Conclusion
There are various factors which talk about individual
differences, but the biographical characteristics state what and
how people are different from each other in terms of age, gender
there also are various studies which bring out contradicting
ideas.
The abilities help us understand the capabilities of different
individuals.
