World Literature

PRELIM
• MESOPOTAMIAN LITERURE-This literature includes mythology of the
Mesopotamian gods, tales of their heroes, poetry, and songs. Some of the writings include
sayings of wisdom.
• EGYPTIAN LITERATURE-Most of Egyptian literature was written in hieroglyphics or
hieratic script; hieroglyphics were used on monuments such as tombs, obelisks, stele, and
temples while hieratic script was used in writing on papyrus scrolls and ceramic pots.
• HEBREW LITERATURE- Its modern form originated in the cities of Europe in the
19th century, drawing on European languages and literatures, historical layers of the
Hebrew textual tradition, and Yiddish for inspiration.
ONE LAND AND TWO RIVERS
• Mesopotamia means =“land between the rivers”
- Tigris River and
- Euphrates River
 Both rivers flooded once a year and left thick bed of silt –Silt: rich, new soil
farmers could plant and harvest enormous quantities of wheat and barley.
 Political- Power of the Priests, Sumer’s earliest governments were controlled by
temple priests ,Farmers believed they needed blessings for success of their crops.
POLITICAL, ECONOMY,RELIGION, SOCIETY

• Economy-Releasing trade Metal tools and weapons(bronze, iron), Increasing


agricultural surplus (better tools, plows, irrigation) Incalong rivers – traded with
Egypt.
• Religion-Polytheistic: Belief in many Gods (3,000!!!) Gods could be angered at
any moment and to keep them happy Sumerians:–Built impressive ziggurats or
temples to sacrifice food, wine and animals–Souls of the dead wandered in the land
of no return.
• Society-Kings and Priests, Wealthy merchants, Ordinary Sumerian people and
Slaves.

THE SCENT OF APPLES

• Scent of Apples contains work from the 1940s to the 1970s. Although many of Santos's
writings have been published in the Philippines, Scent of Apples is his only book published
in the United States.
• Carlos Bulosan, writer, poet, labor activist was buried in Seattle in Mount Pleasant
Cemetery on Queen Anne Hill. Until 1982 his resting place was an unmarked pauper's
grave. Finally a group of his admirers raised the funds to purchase an elaborate headstone
of black granite.
• America is in the Heart by Carlos Bulosan is the autobiography of the Filipino poet. He
begins by describing his early life in the Philippines, describing to the reader what his life
was like as a child.
CLASSICAL JAPANESE WRITING’S THE TALE OF GENJI
(LADY MURASAKI)

• Murasaki Shikibu- Composed the Tale of Genji while a lady in attendance at the
Japanese court, likely completing it about 1010. Because Chinese was the court
scholarly language , works written in Japanese.
• The Tale of Genji – Differed being informed by a comprehensive knowledge of
Chinese and Japanese poetry and in being a graceful work of imaginative fiction. It
incorporate to be the writing of the main character, and its supple narrative sustains
the story through 54 chapters of one character and his legacy.
• The Temple of the Golden Pavilion – Is a novel by the Japanese author Yukio
Mishima it was publish in 1956 and translated into English by Ivan Morris in 1959.
MIDTERM
• Islamic Literature-Literature is a pellucid mirror that reflects the reality of life, society
and the universe. It emanates from ideas, emotions, and beliefs of individual or collective
personality irrespective of national, linguistic, cultural, religious and stylistic differences.
• The term “Islamic literature” consists of two fundamental components, "Islamic‟ and
„literature‟. In Arabic language, the synonym of Islamic literature is al-Adab al-Islamī
‫دب‬
( ‫ل‬PP‫لمياأ‬PP‫لسا‬PP‫ اإ‬.(The term „Islamic‟ is used for those instances where there is a conscious
effort to reflect the fundamental principles and ideals of Islam interpreted in a relatively
restrictive way.
• The Prophet Of Kahlil Gibran-The Prophet is a book of 26 prose poetry fables written in
English by the Lebanese-American poet and writer Kahlil Gibran.
THE VOYAGES OF SINDBAD

• On the return voyage, however, Sinbad faced his usual issues. This time, his ship and
crew were captured by pirates, who took Sinbad prisoner and sold him as a slave to a
rich merchant.
• On Islamic Society Values and Behavior-Islam, founded on individual and collective
morality and responsibility, introduced a social revolution in the context in which it was
first revealed.
• The guiding principle for the behavior of a Muslim is “Virtuous Deeds”. This term
covers all deeds, not only acts of worship. The Guardian and Judge of all deeds is God
Himself. The most fundamental characteristics of a Muslim are piety and humility.
SEMI-FINAL
• The Rubaiyat (Omar Khayyam)- Omar Khayyam was an Islamic scholar who was a poet as well as a mathematician.
He compiled astronomical tables and contributed to calendar reform and discovered a geometrical method of solving
cubic equations by intersecting a parabola with a circle.
• The Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám is a lyric poem in quatrains (four-line stanzas). Rather than telling a story with
characters, a lyric poem presents the deep feelings and emotions of the poet on subjects such as life, death, love, and
religion. The Rubáiyát was published in March 1859 but received little attention.
• Understanding Islam is engrossing, essential reading for both students and all who seek a clearer understanding of the
world in which we live.
• The Meaning of Islam: Islam is an Arabic word that denotes submission, surrender, and obedience. As a religion, Islam
stands for complete submission and obedience to Allah - that is why it is called Islam. The other literal meaning of the
word Islam is peace. This signifies that one can achieve real peace of body and of mind only through submission and
obedience to Allah. Such a life of obedience brings peace of the heart and establishes real peace in society at large.
ONE HUNDRED YEARS OF
SOLITUDE (Gabriel Garcia Marquez-1967)

-The first piece of literature since the book of Genesis that should be required reading for the entire human race. Mr. Garcia
Marquez has done nothing less than to create the reader a sense of all that is profound, meaningful and meaning life.

JAPANESE LITERATURE
• Japanese literature is the one of the major literatures of the world
comparable to English literature in age and variety. the one of the major
bodies of oriental literature. It is less voluminous the Chinese literature
but comparable to Arabic, Persian and Indian literature. Its covers the fifth
century A.D to the present.
• Japanese Language before the art of writing was known in Japan. During
the first centuries of writing in Japan,the spoken language and written
language were identical.
ISLAMIC LITERATURE
• Islam World (Saudi Arabia)- The people of Arabian peninsula have
possessed a strong identity based upon the tenets of slam. “Saudi Arabia”
is a modern nation that adheres to Islam, Honors its Arab heritage and
tradition, and presses vigorously forward in the service of Islam while
securing the welfare of its people. Islam one of the world’s great
monotheistic religions, has Saudi Arabia as its heartland. The followers of
Islam called “Muslim” believed in “God” in Arabic “Allah” and that
Muhammad is his Prophet.
